Ok, it's an understatement to say that I'm excited about this Jeep. Runs, stops and drives pretty darned well AND I got it for a very fair/lowish price. I ACTUALLY have a budget to work with, and overall, I'm finding that it's in used, but not abused shape, with a minimum of bubba'd mods, and some fairly well-executed ones.

    IMG_8010.JPG

    Again the details.

V6 198 Oddfire - Verified with block casting number
T90-A1 - Verified with block casting number and input gear tooth count (18)
    D18 small hole single stick
Dana 27 front - (4.27 gears) - verified with casting number. (double cardan u-joints, correct?)
    Dana 44 rear - (4.27 gears)/2 piece axles - verified visually. (19 spline?)

I'm taking inventory of the current conditions That I find:

Boxed front frame-rails with reinforced front bumper/tow-bar mount.

    IMG_8005.JPG

Boxed front frame rail with rudimentary Saginaw mount. I've already driven this rig on the street and wheeled it during a short, but fairly spirited "yard-wheeling" session and honestly, it works great. Obviously I'll want to make this mount a more permanent/solid setup. Looking at AA's manual mount for $55 bucks.
    IMG_8007.JPG

Should I be seeing daylight through this bushing mount..haha? Trying to decide what I'm seeing. Is it a bushing failure or a spring wrap failure or both? I feel like if I get a new shackle setup, the spring is still going to knock back-and-forth a bit while being used? Might need new springs, too?

Neither. The daylight showing between the two leaves is normal. What you are seeing is called a military wrap. The end of the second leaf is wrapped around the end of the first leaf.

Oh, and I'm glad I pulled the t90's cover. Probably a nice mixture of rust, water and old oil. Not what I was expecting to see. . Definitely going to drain and refill with some fresh go-go juice.

Thanks, 45es, i actually am familiar with military wrap springs. (This is my 6th jeep)

I MAY be totally wrong,( :) happens all the time) and its hard to tell in the pics, but there didn't seem to be the “inner” normal spring that contains the bushing/shackle. Like this:

Right, meant to keep from bending the longest leaf if you hit an obstacle like a ledge with the front tire. Typically the leaf would bend at the fixed end. (edit) Looks like the main leaf is broken and you're running on the military-wrapped loop (?) They would have to be restacked to put the broken loop second from the top. Cheesy repair.

We have a thread of just Saginaw conversions in the Builds forum. Good place to look for insight/inspiration.

I'd run a couple of changes of clean oil through that transmission. See the discussions of GL-4 vs GL-4/GL-5 oils. I'd think it's ok to use the cheap oil (gallon jug at WalMart) to clean out the water and rust, then switch to the proper GL-4 afterwards.

Nothing wrong with the C-shackles, if they aren't worn out. You can buy replacements.

Do you see how the main/top leaf looks to be the one going around whats left of the shackle bushing?

Ok, I was TOTALLY wrong. Just a military wrap with just some really weird lighting throwing off my view. :D :D

I literally had to climb under and get RIGHT next to it to distinguish the two main leaves.

Welcome from Michigan. That looks like it could be a Tuxedo Park, a kind of rare Jeep. Are the windshield hinges Chrome?, the bumper looks like a Tux bumper, the hood hinges look like after market, factory hinges had slots in them so the hood could be lifted off. One way or the other it is a great start for you. Good Luck

Hi Rick, thx for the welcome!
It has tux hood and windshield hinges as well as the tailgate light and front bumper. No rear bumper and no column shift or 60/40 seat but those could have easily been swapped out, so hard to tell 100%. The VIN has long since been changed to a number starting with CJ5a, so i don’t have that info available to research, unfortunately.

That is the way I got mine, my Buddy had two 64's, one a Tux, the other a CJ 5. He had it titled a CJ 5, but had the Tux title, so I had him transfer the Tux Title to my name and made it a Tux after it was restored, that is why I call it a Tux Clone. I have the column shift, but put the floor shift it my Jeep. Good Luck.

OK, so been doing a bit of inspecting, researching and planning. What I think I know (LOL) is that any Buick V6 was never put in front of a T90. That was a four cyl. transmission, correct?

If that's the case, then at some point, the PO, or the PO before that, would have had to adapt this transmission to accept a Chevy/Buick motor, correct? Would you say from this pic, that it looks to be possible or probable that the T90 in my rig is fairly well setup to accept of the motors on the list that those adapters work with?

    2019-12-16_22-19-30.jpg

As far as I know, there are only two companies doing so. Advanced Adapters and Novak. "These conversion kits will work with most Chevrolet V8s & Chevrolet V6s (Gen. I thru Gen. III+), Buick V6s, the Iron Duke I4, some Chevy I6s and
    other GM engines."

The T90 was originally used behind the L and F-head 4 cylinder CJ Jeeps, and behind the inline 6 engines in the Wagons. A T90 in good condition is up to the task for even a small block Chevy up to a 327, though the torque of a 350 is pushing its limits.
I ran a 215 alloy V8 Buick with a T90 for over 20 years in my Tux, and never touched it in all those years. The 215 and your 198 share the same "eared" bellhousing pattern, unique from any other GM pattern. I used a shallow bellhousing from a 198 Buick Special with my stock 4 cyl short input shaft, but this made for tight clearances for my single lever T/C shifter as well as throttle pedal. Does your engine have two "ears" at around 2 and 10 o'clock positions at the bellhousing surface? Do you have a spacer type adapter between the transmission and bellhousing? Those AA and Novak adapters only adapt the bolt pattern of the back of the bellhousing and front of the transmission pattern, so you need to know what you have. Some of the Buick 198 bellhousings had a dual pattern that fit both the T90 and the GM 3/4 speed wider transmission bolt pattern. Most of the aftermarket adapters are around 2" thick and used the longer trans input shaft from the Willys Wagons to make things work.
If you 198 is bolted up to the transmission, your all set. The T90 is plenty strong for the V6 power.
