Pics are from how I found it, date of arrival and the tub being removed last night. I'm going to save the frame and have to replace the floor and perhaps the tailgate. My son RRRREALLY enjoys using the air tools! He's gonna love the welder...

Yeah, I know but it was 225 miles from my house, unregistered and the tires wouldn't hold any pressure... so I thought it was the best thing to do!!R)

Not at all! Nice to think the "hours of planning when I should have been working" would pay off...;)

And to think I just ran mine for nearly 4 hours from ATL to home at 70 mph, swapped out the combat rims and mis-matched tires for NDTs that Billy gave me, then loaded it up with trash. It's ready to go to work. :D

    Chris,
did you already know you have a very early production trailer? you can tell by the 4 side hooks (instead of later production 3 hooks per side)and the tubular rear tailgate supports (instead of the later production stamped steel side supports). do your spring hangers have holes in them?
I have a 46 BT3-C that was in the same family since it was new in 46. I am the second owner.

my serial # is 14849, and the serial # plate is 1"x3" in size roughly. is your serial # plate about the same size?
your trailer was made from leftover WWll production as the 4 hooks per side were same as military units. all in all you have a very rare and desirable trailer. the yahoo 1/4 ton trailer forum has a bunch of serial # data on it.

Yes. My data plate is ~1"x3".

I am somewhat familiar with the yahoo group for which you refer. I intend on doing some more research in this BT3-C on the 'gee. My intent is to use this unit as it was designed and intended. It is in remarkable shape for being 60(+?) years old as far as I can tell so far. I've only had it for a few days although I purchased it many months ago.

Yes I knew about it's history when I bought it. Unfortunately, the original 1"x3" data tag was missing and a previous owner had registered it as a homebuilt in '96. I may try to have it registered with an original S/N in the future whenever I can aquire a blank data tag. The only number I have on it is the ACM number, 154291, found beneath the left fwd spring hanger. My intent is to stay close to original, but upgrade a bit for actual use behind my '71 CJ. Restified, if you will...

Chris, may I ask what kinds of mods you will do? mine came with a spare tire and holder on the outer front of the trailer, and the PO had some home made pipe that fit in the inside pockets to carry a small aluminum boat otherwise it is original and not all hacked up. I have seen Boyink's site and all the mods he did to his trailer.

At a minimum, I'll add a rear receiver. Will help with bikes, etc... Will also replace the Fulton 1-7/8" coupler with a normal 2" so I don't have to swap hitch balls around. I'm working a design that will be about 6" longer than stock to give a bit more clearance while turning/ backing with my ECJ5 for more clearance on the trail rack. Spare tire mount ideas I'm still contemplating... Still undecided on bed tiedowns as I already have a K-3500 and have never needed to tie anything down except for when I transport motorcycles. One other thing I'm tossing around is mounting a set of '70 -'75 CJ factory Hall tail lites to match my ECJ5. Problem is, I can't find them anywhere...

I *love* having the tie-downs - I use them all the time. The trailer can haul quite a load, but is small - the tiedowns let you secure loads that are quite high:

But then again I've always been picking about having loads secured -- I can't stand things being loose and sliding around.

For loads like that I'd have to agree! I am fortunate that I have a fullsize pick-up for large loads. Once I get to the point where I'm ready for the floor, I'll have to decide. Mike if you had some close-ups of the front receiver mounted I'd like to see them. Does it rattle when towing?

Just the ones on my site that you've probably seen:

Not sure if all the A frame castings are the same, mine came to a point that had a 2" square cube looking protrusion, so the reciever tube slipped over that and welded in place nicely. Then there are 2 pieces of 1/4" flat stock, welded to the reciever tube at front and bolted to the A frame arms in the back ( you can see the two bolts in the pic).

Then the large bolt that holds the chain eyes on goes through the flat stock on each side.

All in all very solid, and no -- it doesn't rattle at all. You can see the nut that I welded on the front end of the reciever tub, over a hole, so that I could tighten a bolt against the "drawbar" to elminate rattles, but I never use it.

That's also been a great mod, mostly because my hitch assy is like brand new yet after 4 years. And the long tongue has been handy at times, albiet less so than I had predicted - getting rid of the motorhome eliminated most of my need for it.
