Good afternoon everyone. I'm at the point of my project where I'm almost ready to start my freshly rebuilt dauntless. I have 2 different Rochester 2G carbs, but am trying to decide which one would be a better candidate to rebuild.

I would like a manual choke, FYI.

The first one has a serial number of 17054654. According to Mike's Carb parts, this comes back to a Pontiac application, with a detached choke. From what I understand, there aren't manual choke kits for this type of carb, but as you can see in the pic, it appears there's a bracket for a choke cable (homemade?).

This carb appears to be in much better shape than my other carb. It's possible it's only cleaner.

Carb #2 does not have a serial number on it, which indicates that it's older than 1968? I think that tracks, as I pulled it from a 1967 Jeep. It has the integrated choke on the passenger side. As I mentioned, this one is more cruddy than the carb #1.

Is one carb more desirable than the other? Given my desire to have a manual choke, is it possible with my two carbs? Should I just say screw it and order an FI kit???? Any help is appreciated.

I voted for the manual choke carb. I’m running a manual 2G in my Jeep and it’s been great. Although I did have to fabricate my own linkages to get everything working properly.

if you don’t end up using the manual choke 2G and are looking to get rid of it, let me know.

Those both look like Dauntless carbs to me...they all had that weird throttle arm. The auto choke one would have been a Commando.

    Random thoughts.....
Fuel injection is expensive. Unless you are prepared to spend cash, it simply isn't an option.
Rochester 2G series are about the most reliable carb you can find. They are simple and can be fixed on the trail. Willis has a point on the fuel issue, but I'm willing to take that chance.
I prefer an auto choke. One that is adjusted and operating correctly is invisible and you can always use the cable for a throttle cable.
An inspection of the carbs should tell you more. Check for throttle shaft wear, proper linkage, proper jetting, missing parts, and any physical damage. These criteria may be the tipping factor for your choice.

Here's a better picture of the 'pontiac' carb. You can see the bracket in the top right, which doesn't look stock but lines up with the choke cable from my previous engine. This carb supposedly is designed for an external choke, but not a manual choke.

What size jets should it have? I've never taken apart a rochester, only a carter YF. This will be a learning experience.

What part is missing for the throttle? I have the linkage piece that connects to the ball, if that's what you mean.

Fuel injection is in my "someday" plan, but the jeep has been in the garage for 7 years now, and I just want to get it back on the road. My wife has been more lenient with the budget lately, since the end is in sight, but $1000 compared to a $25 carb rebuild kit is a no brainer for now.

Plus.... I just spent $200 on those fancy stainless steel fuel lines that go over the engine and one of them mounts to a carb.

I am simply not an electronic engine control guy, so fuel injection is out. I would take the manual choke 2g and rebuild it completely with correct jetting for your altitude. I like the 2g and I have great luck with mine.

i want to mess around with direct mechanical fuel injection like they use on diesels. it'd be easier to start when cold, and no issues with carbs on slopes.

I guess that's one of my questions/concerns with carb #1. According to the Mike's carburetor site, this carb is a Divorced Choke model (choke thermostat is mounted in the intake manifold), not a manual choke model. From what I understand, there aren't any kits to convert this carb to manual choke, and I'm not sure the bracket that you see in the pics is actually supposed to be there.

I’ve never seen the divorced choke model in person, but I believe it essentially works like a manual choke, but the choke linkage is on the passenger side of the carb. I don’t see any reason why you can’t just put a manual choke cable in its place, and it seems like the bracket that’s already there should work just fine for a manual choke. Just lock the cable housing in the bracket and thread the end of the cable through the cable stop and the choke should work as intended.
