I have never seen the original snorkel for my 62 cj5. Hood has the notching for it.
Does anyone have a used one in my area or pics of one?

Also with the factory F134 what can I use to make a snorkel if I cannot locate a decent used one?
I'm making a trail rig that I can run on the road so I'm flexible with what to do or use within reason of course lol

You understand that the notch in the CJ hood is a vestige of the military version? If you look for "fording kit for the M38A1" you will find plenty of pictures. Many things are different for the military version, and I expect the military fording kit will not be completely compatible. There is no civilian fording accessory that I know of.

You can ask about a fording kit on the G503 forum - that's your best bet for finding M38A1 stuff. However, most of this military stuff is now collectible, and you may have to pay collector prices for a vintage fording kit ... if available at all.

Fording prolly why I couldn't find anything lol
I was thinking of using the civilian carb horn pointed towards the hood cutout and using the piece of the fording kit from the cutout outwards
Appears it goes to a oil bath type of deal before going to carb but I'm not using that.

Bear in mind the military M38A1 fording capability was a complete system. Most of it was built-in at the factory. The so called "kit" only adds the removable external parts.

Similar to CJ5 but everything from the crankcase, fuel tank, generator, master cylinder and lights, to the voltage regulator, distributor and axles were sealed, and provided with internal "positive pressure" during fording.

While we are talking about fording has anyone extended the axle vents so they are higher up in the engine bay?

I haven't personally but I have seen that plus lots of silicone seal on ignition components on older Jeeps that do a lot of deep water fording.

Wow that's crazy all the systems were sealed and pressurized.
Yea I'm not going that radical. Arizona hardly ever has water lol I just want to be able to do a river crossing if the need arises usually I keep the water level to the bottom of my seats or lower.

I'll add a tube to each dif vent and run something from carb to top of window frame.
Has anyone fabricated something for the intake ?

There's more to it than just slapping a pipe on the intake :(

Understand that even with the fording system the M38A1 required changing all lubricants after going deeper than 12 inches of water. There's also prep things you need to do such as slacking off the fan belt etc. As well as the sealed electrical parts there was also a different carb used that was sealed against water ingress.

Either they made a lot of improvements to the 97 TJ or I was just lucky. I never had to do anything just as long as the water stayed below the factory inlet snout on my airbox was alright.
I imagine the electronics were better protected in 97 versus the 62.

    Electronics? In 1962?
A CJ in stock form will easily go through water to the top of the tires....call it 30" or so.
As mentioned above, loosen or remove the fan belt to prevent radiator damage, and you'll probably get water in the gearboxes.

I relocated the air cleaner for my 3b inside my cab behind the dash. It doesn't technically raise the intake any higher, but the wave of water at a crossing will be much higher in the engine bay than under the dash.

I'm not sure I'd recommend this for a daily driver; there is a surprising amount of noise that comes out of an intake, and a backfire though the carb could be interesting.

I can get pics if interested.

Or you could adapt at M38A1 air cleaner to the vehicle. The bolt holes all line up to the factory holes the passenger side mounting bracket will have to be cut off and moved forward. The air horn on top of the carb is not water proof and the distributor isn't either so you still have to watch how deep you go.

Hey that turned out really nice
That's the oil bath style air filter correct?
I'm wondering if I should use one myself since most of my running will be in the desert lots of dust and sand.
