CJ5 Snorkel Options

Ya know I was thinking the same thing. That and wondering how many motor pool guys from back then had like extra fingers or something. For sure can't find that stuff not that I'd want to use asbestos lol. Prolly worked real good tho most the toxic stuff does

 

Oil Bath Or Regular Air Filter Element?

 

I extended my axle breathers. The rear one into the bed area, with a cheap clear fuel filter on it. The front is the same set up, fastened to the top of the inner fender inside the engine bay. Not sure the fuel filter on the end is the right thing to do but, that's what they were doing way back when when I put this heap together.

I also installed an electric fan that I can turn off if I'm in deeper water.

I don't consider any of this "water proof." Water resistant at best. When I built my JEEP, we were still able to play around at the local river so, I built with the thought of needing to have at least a little protection while in a deeper mud hole, crossing a stream or dunking into the shallow part of the river to get out to the one island. Those days are gone and everything around here is closed to motor vehicles, period.

If I'm ever in anything deep enough to suck water into the carb, I'm in deeper than I ever wanted to be. Not that it couldn't happen. But I'm kinda not into the mud holes and water if I can avoid it.

 

Watched the whole thing. Didn't once mention the vent breathers on the axles or the tranny/tc.
Don't forget to change the oil in the engine and axles and tranny/tc, either!

Ok it's time to revive a old thread.

Well I was wondering if anyone has made there own snorkel for a M38A1? Like where did they get the corrugated hose? The reason I'm asking is because I turn my jeep into a submarine today and filled the air box up with about a gallon of water. So I'm going to make a short snorkel that goes half way up the windshield. I was deep enough I had water over the hood and it filled the floor pans up. But I made it through I think it was the extra weight from the hard top that helped out.

 

So why not find an original GI snorkel kit?

Or use some generic flex hose if necessary, perhaps the stuff they use to route exhaust fumes out of service bays, or irrigation suction hose.

That's what I was thinking of using I just need find the right size and maybe Home depot or Lowes would have it.

 

Here is a full kit. Seems to me it would save time and money versus making everything.
