That is one great conversion. I only hope that once I get my '72 going it turns out that nice.

Looks great. With the half doors it looks a heckuva lot like a real Commando.

One question, in some of your earlier pics you blocked out your license plate. Why do people do this? What's the difference between showing your plate number on the interweb and displaying it in public every day when you drive the Jeep? Can someone actually do anything nefarious with your plate number?

Wow buddy, Im so jeleous! After talking back and forth for 6 months my deal with my 2 CJ7s has finally gone to hell. Anyways I went through all of the hassel of getting the parts and grille. Oh well guess I have some cool collectables to hang in my garage! But I found a gorgeous CJ5 that I will be picking up in two weeks. Thanks so much for keeping me up to date on your rig, it sure is unique and you should be proud. Keep Jeepin

Well guys I finally got a jeep! no more talking about it. I was on my way to get a CJ5 and somewhere along the way I got distracted and bought a 1979 CJ7 with the laredo package. It was probably the price differance of the two Jeeps that made up my mind. I just couldnt justify spending $10,000 on a CJ5 exspecially if its not perfect. But anyways the CJ7 I got has the AMC 304 and auto transmission Its so much fun to drive and with the side-pipes people are always looking at it. Well to set the story straight I paid 7500 for the Jeep Im sure that was a fair price. I really cant wait to go play with it. Also I was reading a Jeep magazine and read about the Vintage CJ5 off road trip that mentioned the creator of this web site Awesome Job guys. Maybe Ill meet up with yall one day. leave me some comments. Oh yeah and once I get the funds back up I would defiantely like to do the commando conversion it just looks so sexy!

I totally agree with you, but the only problem with owning a commando is that almost everything has to be custom. The commando was a great vehicle but it seems to me like Jeep adandoned it. Much like what they did to the cherokee. They kill all of the great vehicles and then replace them with grocery getters. I will never own a new Jeep, the closest I will ever get to that is my 2001 Cherokee. But Im sure that Jeep will try to revive the commando at somepoint and say its going old school, while at the same time taking away all of the heritage that the original vehicle brought to the dinner table.

    If they do come out.

They will be on the 10 worst auto of the year list.
Partly because it will have a caravan motor and auto.

Then they will stop making them, and then we will snap them up,
gut them, and put in a 225 and sm 420 and call it good:)

ALLJPN Ive just found a commando hood for my CJ project and was wondering what type of welding did you do to combine the two hoods? Im also planning on taking the center section on my cj7 hood and intergrating it into the commando hood, I like the hump. Also did you use your original hood prop?

One more question All4Jpn. DId you try to use a cj7 hood for your project? I read that you suggested to use a YJ hood but I would hate to try to fab 3 hoods together. Im trying to keep the speed hump from the cj7 hood so that it still has that distinct look to it. Well I got my commando hood in the other day so as soon as I get leave im gonna go check it out. I cant wait!

the yj hood works better because the rear 6 inches of the yj hood,,,the bump in the middle,,,is almost as wide as the bump in the middle of the mando hood,,,,if you just use the cj-7 to mando hood,,,will have two lines to nowhere for the last rear 6 inches
