I've read quite a few threads about clutch noise  and I hope I'm wrong about mine needing a new TO bearing but...I am getting my '71 CJ5 running around town now and noticed a sound that comes only when the clutch pedal is depressed. It sounds similar to sandpaper on metal. Much more a hiss than a grind. I am trying to convince myself it is something innocuous but I don't know. It goes away when the pedal is released. I've got the clutch cable adjusted so the gears engage with after about 2 inches of release on the pedal. Couldn't be an adjustment issue could it? (there I go trying to convince myself it's something easy!! )

    Thanks for the help!

My CJ5 is torn apart right now for a similar problem. The clutch squealed sometimes when I engaged it. Worse in cold weather. That progressed over a year to periods when it would not disengage unless I clutched twice at times. Turned out to be the input shaft bearing instead of the clutch. We're doing the clutch also since it's all torn apart.
