Dana 27 Knuckle Wipe Seal Orientation

Folks, I have my axle torn down to just the housing and am about to tap in new inner seals, knuckle bearings and reassemble. It occurred to me that I am unsure of which direction the rubber seal goes on the knuckle. One side is all rubber and one side seems to have a metal retainer ring. I see that the seal itself sits in a groove but in which direction?

 

Metal part out, seam at the top. Also good to put the felt over the bell end before putting the knuckle on otherwise you'll have to cut it. Metal plates go on top and bottom with seams at the sides.

 

So when I put the rubber seal in with the metal part in (toward wheel) it sits in the lip inside the knuckle. Does that make sense?

 

Install the rubber seal so that the rubber part wipes the "globe" of the axle housing. The two half moon retainers hold against the metal backing of the seal.
