    Hi all,

This is my first post to the forum and I hope I am doing it in the correct place. Let me say this site has been a godsend to my 1970 CJ5 restoration project, could not do it without all the great advise found here. I know there are many posts here regarding installing HEI ignition into the old 225 odd fire engines and many of them have helped me during my conversion. One problem I ran into and could not find the answer anywhere was why after installing the "CRT" HEI system (by the way I would not recommend due to many clearance issues) my engine would quit running or run terribly as soon as I connected the vacuum advance. To make a long story short it all came down to using a ported vacuum source. My original 2GC carb had only one vacuum port to which the original advance was connected to. The problem was this was not a "ported" source, meaning with the engine running at idle this port still supplied ~15hg of vacuum. The HEI vacuum advance must have virtually no vacuum at idle, if it does this is why when you connect the line it dies - too much vacuum = too much initial advance. Since my setup did not have ported vacuum here was my solution. It took me a frustrating week of messing with everything to figure this out but once done the system functions as intended and the motor runs like a champ. Also remember if you are using the "CRT" distributor or any distributor with an adjustable advance to turn the adjustment all the way out counter clockwise. If you don't it will advance too fast when the carb butterfly valves open. Hope this helps someone out as it was very frustrating until I made this modification.
