Ok, I am not understanding why you are doing 22mph in 3rd on 6% grade.
Why does that sound like you are trying to run in low range?

Actually for me that is acceptable. I have the T-90 and 6% will put me into 2nd and probably at 25 going uphill. The '60 Ford F100 I used to drive had a six in it and a granny-gear 4 speed. On 6% grades 30 to 35 mph was it. Not a big deal.

I don't worry about the Turkeys in the fancy stuff that want to zip through at 80 mph. They really need to slow down and look at the scenery a little.
When I find a spot to pull over I do, and let them try to kill themselves on the mountain roads. Then I continue.:hurrican:

As for gearing in the differentials, you might want to try 4.10's or 4.11's if you can find them. Good off-road, and good on road gearing.

I also don't run faster than 50 or 55 on the flat areas. Any one that wants to go faster can change lanes. If I had the overdrive I would probably be doing 60, but that is it. Our old CJ5's are not really built for running faster than that anyway. An overdrive is not in my future, unless someone leaves me one in their will. Not in a financial position to get one.

I need tires for my '78 GoldWing, and a new battery for my Willys and those are going to be stretching the budget at the moment.mehh

I have a Buick 350 mated to a t-18 with a dana 20 t-case (so your dana 18 will bolt right to the tranny) that would liven your little rig right up! Let me know if you are interested in it.

i am ACUTELY aware of what speeds these rigs were designed for.
and my jeep simply does NOT have enough power.

One thing a lot of people may not realize is that at the elevation we live at, you've given up a great deal of your power just because there's no oxygen. Your 70-something HP 4 banger is probably making only 50 or 60 HP in Durango, and it just gets worse as you head up into the mountains. You can compensate for this to some extent with jetting & timing changes, but it'll never run as strong as at lower elevation.
The V6 is an excellent engine for a CJ-torquey, dependable, and lightweight. I think you'll be very happy with the swap.

I live here in Ohio and the elevation is not something I have to worry about. my way to work consist of one hill and I still hit the top of it at around 45. I don't ever push mine past 50. and there are allot of passing spots here for people to go around if they want.

I grew up in WV so I do understand hills. but when I was out in Colorado it's a different world such beautiful aria. we was in Golden, Black hawk, oh my god road, look out mtn. We could tell a difference in the power in our f350 we was driving so I'm sure it would kill our little F heads.

From my reading, the Buick V6 weighs less than the F-head four so there is a big advantage there. Plus, looking in my engine bay there is plenty of room. Though things might get really tight where the steering box and brake master cylinder are.

I love my combo with the T98, 225V6, 5:38's, and OD. I think you will be happy. Night and day difference from the F134 that was there originally.

this lack of power is almost certainly why the po sold it.(he didnt tell me this)
he lives in denver and would have gotten himself killed trying to drive it anywhere.
with everybody else going at least twice as fast as him on all those cloverleafs, on /off ramps.

The loop around Atlanta (285) is 55 MPH limit but everybody drive about 75-80 in the slow lane and that is your on ramp. Well, in order to merge, you have to be doing a minimum of 60 MPH. You almost have to bend fenders to force your way in line. Yes she caused a bad accident because she braked before getting on. I knew she was going to do it so I pulled off the shoulder to the right (I was right behind her) and the guy behind me and others, didn't. Three others pushed her into a Semi at the rear wheels. Nasty looking wreck but no one serious. I was in my V6 Jeep and would have had no trouble merging at 60-70.
