    Hi Guy, i need some advice on exhauts. i have a tbi amc 360 with fenderwell headers and muffler tie direct to it. Muffler were install 10 years ago for a 304 application when i was 21 years old.

    Now that i'm 31 i find those very noisy and i'm always afraid to get pulled by cop for abusive noise.

    I want to retain the fenderwell headers but like to have a more quiet muffler. Would like to know otger experience with muffler.

    I have side pipes on mine. Guy that built them used truck pipes and put longest glass packs that he could fit inside. Sounds great. Maybe to loud for you not sure. I dont feel like it's too loud.sounds like a Jeep should sound

    Flowmaster 40 should tuck up high and tight outside the frame rails. And they're made of heavy steel so fairly impervious to damage and rot.

    You're already outside the frame rails, so you are pretty much limited by the length and width of the floor outside the frame. I'm not a big fan of headers, but if you want to keep these, I would suggest asking your local muffler shop about the widest and most flat replacement muffler that will fit in the length ahead of the rear wheel and still dump to the outside.

    i think you point out a good thing....

    i want to retain the header since it leave a lot a working space under the jeep and the fact that i dont know if i will be able to use inside rail manifold of headers on my custome fab frame.

    Run the fattest tailpipes you can out the rear somehow the extra length and pipe will tone it way down.

    In my flat fender with v6, I too have headers and side exhaust exiting in front of rear wheels. I replaced my Flowmasters due to how loud they were. After some research, I replaced the Flowmasters with Walker brand mufflers. If you search their catalog, there are several choices to consider. They are not to loud when on the gas but quiet when cruising. Two people can easily hold a conversation. Another consideration to look at would be the Hush Thrush muffler.

    I had summit racing genaric turbo mufflers and 2.5 pipe on my cj3 with a 283. Chevy v8 sounded good at idle and when on the pedal you heard it but not obnoxious.

    The Walkers that Ed mentioned should be regular passenger car mufflers, and they will be quieter than any of the hot rod mufflers like Flowmaster or Magnaflow or whatever. A muffler shop _should_ have a listing of regular passenger car mufflers by external size and inlet/outlet size. There may also be a listing by size online somewhere, if you search. I believe the "turbo" mufflers are not very quiet because they actually were meant to be used with a turbo, and the turbo quiets the exhaust some before it gets to the muffler.

    My mess didn't have headers but it had dual mufflers. The mufflers came out of the frame on both sides. I tore em off a few times. I am running a 304 tbi. I had a muffler shop install a flow master and ONE exhaust. Under the frame rails..

    JMO. Look at the search feature for these mufflers Mufflers - Holley Performance Products
    Note you cannot search by sound type.They are not selling based on being quiet.
    Aggressive = really loud.
    Moderate = kinda loud.
    Mild = louder than stock.
    JMO - the hot rod muffler makers are the wrong place to look for a quiet muffler. Starting out, headers will be louder than iron manifolds, regardless of the muffler type. You are also going to have a very short exhaust path, and the exhaust will exit close to the driver's seat. Pretty sure any muffler you can fit under these constraints is going to have a "performance" sound. To quiet down noticably, you'll need a really quiet muffler. Your typical passenger car purchaser wants their car to be quiet, and they are fitted with quiet mufflers.
