    Gents-

I am finishing the frame up (totally stock :hurrican: , but added an O/D) resto on "Percival" my '59 CJ5, and am trying to get my front PTO winch set up figured out. I've got a Koenig pto set up with the OD adapter, and am trying to mount a Ramsey winch. The PTO I got off of Ebay, and the winch was a gift, so I didn't get it as a set-up.

The part that has us thrown for a loop is that it appears with the winch set up so that the PTO driveshaft is at a height where it will clear everything (and drive the winch), if the jeep bottoms out, I'll bend the PTO driveshaft.

Is his "normal"? Is there something I'm overlooking? Does anyone out there have a front PTO set up that they could make some measurements, and send some photos from underneath?

Any help would be GREATLY Appreciated!

    Eck

PS - I will post photos!!!

There were different PTO's. The ones used on the trucks and wagons don't work with the CJ's.

what model Ramsey PTO is it? I have a cross reference that will tell what vehicle it was made to fit.

As for advice on PTO winches. Get rid of it and go with electric if you have to have a winch.

PTOs belong on farm equipment; on hobby equipment they are likely to be used as 'toys', and that leads to trouble and potential injury.

You've heard the term "wrapped around the axle"? Well, it would not be a pretty sight.

    Have a looksie here -

    http://vernco.com/id259.htm

This was on a CJ3 something-or-other but should be very similar. Note- IIRC Dr. Vern has a "funny" bellcrank arm on his, different from the later model used on the 5s, the later one gives a bit more clearance for the PTO driveshaft.

I'll be going through the same exercise on Tonka sometime next year (hopefully), I'd be interested in hearing how you work around the exhaut pipe problem. The Doc did it through some fancy bending, the original install instructions apparently called for throwing in a piece of flex tube *under* the crossmember, don't think I like that idea.

Which model Koenig PTO did you get? The proper one for the CJs doesn"t have the notch along the top edge. If you do have one with the notch (designed for the pickups/wagons) the "dangle angle' is wrong & the PTO shaft won't clear something or other :(.

    Good luck,

    Howard.

Save you the trouble, here's some pics of my install hope they help you. Pics may not be the best but let me know if I can help more.

The previous owner's grandsons winched my jeep off the ground (just the rear hitch touching) with the winch and grandpa had a cow!! took 'em a while to get it down without body damage. I personally don't recommend that!!

Most of the jeeps Ive worked on (with pto winches) have spacers to lower the bump stops to prevent damage.

I've got a rear pto on my jeep. It came with it, so im not much help on the install. I have studied several pictures on the net trying to figure out a way to relocate mine to the front. The pics I have seen indicate a tight fit from the pto past the motor. Good luck.

I agree with Kamel. When you get it up and running be carefull! There are a lot of rotating part and NO safety devices other than your respect for and knowldge of the equipment.

Thanks for all of your help - I found out from Carl Walck (Walck's 4WD - GREAT source for parts and info), that just like jon posted, bump pad spacers are the way to go. With luck, Percival and I will be driving home next weekend . . .
