When the families first Jeep, '67 Kaiser was handed down to me at 16 yrs old I ran out of gas near a friends house. Went and knocked on the door and his granddad answered. I told him my issues and he replied, dont have any gas but, I have some shine. He escorted me back to the Jeep and poured a couple of quarts into tank. Fired it up and away I went to gas station.

Melted down my wire harness on wimpy first time at tellico. Horn wire pinched between fender and frame when it flexed. 15 minutes later i had 3 wires going from battery, to switch, to starter solinoid, and coil. Ran the rest of the weekend like that

I was Jeeping in Uwaharrie National Forest when my frame rusted where the transmission cross member/ belly pan connected. My transmission fell about a foot. Used a ratchet strap to hold transmission up close to its normal position and limped out in 4low

My fan took out my radiator on Deer Valley at the creek crossing. Ended up pulling the radiator out cutting and bending everything that was leaking over and adding a can of Bars Leak. I made it out of the trail and drove it like that for at least 5 years.

Happen to some friend of mine. We use winch rope to do the alignement or a small car emergency jack.

When I was first running my 2a back in high school the jc whitney tank i got had a cork sender gasket that disintegrated and would clog up the the line sometimes. I would pull over unscrew the line at the pump and i had one of those scissor foot air pumps with a pointy end on it i would blow out the line back into the tank and that got me going again. That crappy tank rusted out in a year so i put in a plastic tank after that.

I've rebuilt carbs, welded a rear axle back in, rebuilt distributers, replaced fuel pumps, flipped vehicles back over, reseated tires on beads, and replaced driveshafts. Probably a bunch more things I'm forgetting. The vast majority of these problems came from a jeep I had in high school. Glad that one is gone.

A picture of me putting the pan back on ended up in Jp. I ran that pan for another year before I got nervous and swapped it out.

I had this happen to me in my 85 cj 7 years ago trying to climb a pile of grass and leaves at a landscape company. My motor mount broke and the fan annhilated the radiator.

With the Jeep club in the late 60s at Glamis Sand Dunes.
Club member blew the clutch disc in a bowl.
No way to get the Jeep out of the bowl by towing round and round.
Members took the front sheet metal group off the front of the Jeep.
Everybody helped lift that F-head out of the frame.
While this was going on, others went into town to source the clutch disc.
They replaced the disc and put the whole Jeep back together so the Jeep could be driven out.
This whole affair took about 6-7 hours; not bad considering working conditions.
A member filmed this in Super 8. Then edited and sped it up into about 8 minutes.
It was shown at club meetings for years and years.
I last saw it about 10 years ago.
Don't know the whereabouts of that video now.
NOTE TO OTHERS: Do NOT let your Jeep roll backwards/forwards with transmission in gear, low range,
and clutch pedal depressed for any length of time/distance. Centrifugal force will scatter that disc.

A couple years ago at our Club's Jamboree a guy drove a stick through his steel YJ gas tank. They mixed a golf ball sized gob of Seal All with shredded toilet paper, held it over the hole for 2-3 minutes and drove off. I have a tube of seal all in my Jeeps tool box now.

Rubicon Trail story from the past......
Sometime in the mid 90's, when I was about 20 (1994 maybe?) I solo ran the Rubicon in my modded 68 CJ5. I remember it was Halloween weekend. I went up there a lot, growing up in the Sierra foothills and I knew the trail well. I did not see a single soul that weekend...well almost (that was when difficult Jeeping was still a bit of a fringe hobby). I went up in the afternoon and camped along Ellis creek the first night. The next day things started out great. The weather was cool and sunny and the jeep was running awesome. I made my way up towards Spider Lake and went through the Little Sluice Box nice and smooth. I was feeling good, in tune, one with the machine. Then, while heading down the other side just before entering the Big Sluice I noticed an odd creaking sound I wasn't used to....hmmm. So I stopped to check it out. Soon I found that my rear driver spring hanger had cracked away and separated from the frame. It was barely attached. So I'm in a pickle... what to do? Not much choice. While I'm packing my backpack to hike out, I hear that low rumble of a Jeep coming up behind me. It's a father-son team in two identical, white CJ7's. And hallelujah!, the guy has a welder on his jeep. Now back then, not too many folks had welders on their jeeps...and that weekend, these were the only people I saw over three days. Pure luck. So, we dug around in the tool boxes, came up with some scrap metal, patched and welded the frame and I finished the trip with no other issues. Of course there was that one stressful, sketchy staircase spot on Cadillac Hill that always gave me problems (just the wrong wheelbase) but I got through it. I wheeled that old jeep with the ugly trail-repaired frame for a few more years til I sold it. A welder is high on my list of things to do with my current jeep.

The Rubicon has a history of incredible trail repairs. I was involved in one such repair a few pages back. A few weeks ago I read a crazy story on Pirate about a family that took their new lifted JK with 37’ s on the Rubicon during the Jamboree. Just before Rubicon Springs the JK went completely dead, no power, no start, dead. Jamboree mechanics worked on the JK for hours but could not get it to start. Actual Jeep Factory engineers were on the trail during the Jamboree and they worked on the JK with still no success. It was determined the Jeep would need to be towed to a dealership and plugged into the factory computer system to reset the theft deterrent system. The family was hauled out by other Jeeps and a legendary Lake Tahoe resident with a Unimog was hired to tow the JK out. It took them 16 hours to tow that fully loaded 4 door Jeep off the trail and into town. At the dealership they still couldn’t get the Jeep to power up and even consulted with engineers in Toledo. By chance they inspected the underside of the JK and discovered that whoever installed the lift had a tie rod clamp rotated into a position that when the suspension was compressed on full turn the tie rod clamp would rub against the main wiring harness. The harness finally wore through and shorted out killing all powers to the Jeep. Madness!

Seen that too. A customer back at the dealership with a T-18 J-truck driving on an easy trail had his truck in first gear (pretty sure he was not in low range) and approached a short downhill. He pushed in the clutch and let the truck roll down the hill. The clutch disk ended up like handfuls of rockwool in the bell housing.
