I know my CJ5's and even the M38a-1's pretty well, but have a question regarding the front fenders on the flat-fender models. Do they all interchange? Is the any real difference between the 2a, 3a, and 3b front fenders?
I am collecting some parts to build a 3b just because I like them. Yes, the cowl, hood and grill are different than the earlier models, but are the front fenders the same?
    Thanks-Donny

There are lots of little differences over the years and models. The overall shape and dimensions are all the same though. Any flatfender will interchange with any other.

The most noticable difference is in the front shock cut out. On a 2A the cut out is small and square and set nearly vertical above the lower shock mount. While on a 3A or 3B the cut out is larger and mover forward a few inches. Mounting holes are pretty much all the same between the three. Battery kick outs vary a little but no enough to worry about. OH also 2A fenders have mounting tabs to attach to the frame. These are almost always damaged and they dropped them in the 3A

I picked up a 3B project from a guy with 4 total fenders. All had the mounting tabs for attaching to the frame. I have no reason to believe they're not 3B fenders since I also got 2 3B bodys/hoods/grilles/etc.

Can you elaborate? Every flattie I've seen and owned has had the piece of hat-channel extend down to the frame with the two 3/8" fine-thread bolts into the frame. Unless you are referring to another location on the fender?

Are they the little ones at the very tail end?

I just figured the ones that didn't have them had already broken off. (y)

According to Bob Westerman this feature was dropped on later 3As.

I think mine have a 90 degree tab on the skirt that bolts to the top of the frame rail with one bolt. Every one I have had used the SAE fine thread with the hat channel otherwise.
