    I was going to say the same thing about using CJRL (cotton jacketed rubber lined) hose for the bar. It's what a FS employee would have used. Handcrews in the fire biz would do the same with short lengths of hose when shouldering a saw going to and from the fireline to keep the cutters on the chain from tearing shirts and necks esp when the sawyer slips or otherwise loses his balance.

    The wildland agencies don't buy much CJRL anymore- it's pretty much all synthetic now (lighter weight- we haul this stuff for miles sometimes on our backs. Well, it seems like miles). But I think the municipal guys still use it a lot. Try getting ~ 3" diameter hose. But back in the day, it was all CJRL and many wildland engines still keep some on hand for the very start of a hoselay, where pressures on the hose are greatest.

    Mike S is right- the old mac or homelite was the saw of the day back then. They were heavy, cantankerous but still a big change from the 2 man crosscut saws (aka misery whips) or axes.

    I once found some old macs in a FS shed and had my handcrew sawyers haul them around for a week of hiking/fitness training (the saws didn't run, but their weight and bulk is what I was looking for). The guys praised the new Stihls every day after that....

    We just tossed a good length of 2" a few weeks back. I'll watch for more if it will help.

    I miss humping hose all over creation. Always seemed to be laid down into a hole with no way to pack it out to the bottom. Best pull ever was attaching to a hitch after hooking all to a single trunk no gates or wyes.

    Meant to say that I think I have a photo of an old jeep in Oregon piled deep in fire hose. Not meant as a hijack either.

    Been a while since I've posted on here. Today, I made a strobe light stand that breaks apart for easy storage. Stay tuned for some more add-ons and upgrades! I plan on rebuilding the engine, swapping to a 4 spd, upgrading the axles to a D30 and flanged offset D44 so I can run selectable lockers, a bumper sprayer, 12 volt electrical system, and a water buffalo with a portable pump and some hose. My fire chief and assistant chief think this jeep could be used for brush fires since there are a lot of tight ATV trails that this will fit down and our brush truck can't.

    They are aftermarket ones from the 50's/60's. Old school buses had them too. I got them from Ebay. Search for "arrow light" or "arrow turn signal". They sometimes pop up at swap meets.

    Haven't done too much to ted for the past few months with the holidays and I was away for work. Yesterday I got the ambition, with the help from a friend, to pull the engine out. And today I pulled it all apart. I was amazed to see nothing destroyed inside there. All the rings were intact. Only had two broken valve springs. The bottom coil broke off. Cylinder walls look good with no major gouges and the crank had no big scraps. I was surprised too to see that all the studs came out. Cam is in good shape too. There wasn't too much sludge in the bottom of the oil pan either. Maybe an 1/8" or so.

    Also got the new axles painted and ready to be put in!

    What a work and what a success! I am flabbergasted.
    Nothing is perfect but in this case it is more than perfect.
    It is artistic, great talent.

    Long ago, a friend of mine told me, because I was able to repair many things : The man is intelligent/clever by his hands.
    It was a compliment. 50 years later, I wonder if it could have be better for me not to repair anything, but work in banking business, with clean hands (if we can say so). My expreince in trading was not very sucessful:oops:
    Maybe bankers/traders can of course repair Jeep, I don't know.

    Anyway, you make a fantastic job, I won't be able to do it. Bravo.

    A few years ago I went to go and pick up my Harley heads from a friend who did the port and polish work for me. A friend went along and when we showed up Tom said that he had just got done doing the rough work on a set of SBC heads.
    Joel whispered to me. "Crap, his rough work looks better than my finished work"

    Finally got the transmission and transfer case done. Also got the engine back from the machine shop yesterday. Before I know it, this thing will be rolling again under its own power!

    Perhaps I missed it earlier Nate but, what trans is that hanging there? Looks like a lot of weight hanging on those 4 bolts at the bell housing/engine stand.

    Its a T18 with some custom machine work to mate up to the 4 cylinder bell housing.
