Funny...I had nearly the same problem with a CRT HEI on my 304. Once every 30 starts, or after sitting for a period, I would have no spark. I'd only get spark if I removed the 12V power wire from the cap and then reinstalled it. This caused huge problems when I removed my carb and installed a Howell fuel injection. I replaced the cap, coil, and module and everything has been fine for the last six months.

I have noticed the coils having a pretty heavy coat of black paint on the metal core. I scrape and sand the corner for both ground straps which I put both onto the same screw.

I completed a CRT HEI install on the 225 in my MB-5 last weekend. Not too bad and well worth the effort. Pictures would help. Thanks to this forum I got her done. This thing starts so easy I can't believe it. I used a flat head socket cap screw on the manifold for a flush mount and less grinding. I also noticed that the connectors to the cap although the clip in do not fit tight and can slid down slightly...this was very true on the power lead as couple small zip ties have solved that problem.
The conversion is well worth the $$ time and effort.

I have the CRT hei on my 69 cj it ran great Until the vacuum advance module crapped out. I have no idea for how long it did not idle and fouled plugs and ran like crap.I thought it was the carb , I have since upgraded to a new vacuume advance Re timed and added a top mount connection so it does not hit the fan anymore. With that being said I just put the pertronix conversion on my ‘67 and that fit great and no grinding of the intake. Neither of these engines made much power above 3500 rpms all stock not sure if that the dauntless or a distributor issue

The dauntless isn't going to build much above 3500, unless you do something crazy with a camshaft, that's not what it's designed to do.

I didn’t upgrade to a different distributor I still have the crt performance hei, but I put a new vacuume advance that has a 90 degree bend up for the vacuum line connection. I also recurved the distributor with lighter springs and weights.

I have a DUI distributor installed on my 62 CJ with 225 and 4bbl carb. It runs great but timing and vacuum advance are hard for me to get set. I believe my timing is set with 1 and 6 next to batt/tach connection my timing is about 10-12. I think I might try to set that back to 8-10 because it has trouble starting unless I pump gas pedal twice. But runs great idles about 850.
