Hei Firing Order

I have replaced the old distributor with a HEI distributor. Time the engine to TDC and the jeep will not idle! I followed the TSM for the firing order, I was just wondering if anyone has any other information on the topic.

 

does it run at all? If not you might be 180° out.
I had to play with the position of the distributor a bit just to get it to run, and then set timing afterwards.

 

Not running at all. If I am 180 degrees out I will have to rotate the distributor clock wise 180?

 

What engine? If it’s 180 out move the wires 180.

You understand that the HEI distributor is no different from the original distributor in terms of firing order? Do you get spark?

Your profile nor your sig show what engine you have. Assuming it's a 258 six, the firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. Align the timing marks and you will be on #1 TDC or 180 degrees out. I presume you put the distributor in and turned it so that the rotor is pointing at the #1 spark plug tower. If you are 180 out (ie on the exhaust stroke of #1 instead of the compression stroke), your firing order now goes 6-2-4-1-5-3. The rotor is pointing at the #6 tower instead of the #1. Go around the circle and install your plug wires in order starting with #6.

 

Yes I get spark and fuel just does not want to idle it sounds like it going to start but does not. I did the thumb on the #1 spark plug rotated motor until I felt the pressure. Then placed the mark on the #1 and installed the Distributor and did the numbering firing order like in the TSM.

I am going to try the 6-2-4-1-5-3 order. Know does 6 is the place of 1 correct?

So it does not bark and pop, but instead doesn't want to stay running? Way out usually gives you a lot of protest. If it felt like it wanted to start, I would rotate the distributor some. You are supposed to have some advance, and you're only guessing when you line up the distributor to start it. There's 60 degrees between each tower... I'd try 15 or 20 degrees more advance and see what happens, better or worse.

 

Have you hooked up a timing light?
