Help with Dana 300 shift problems!

I just bought an 84 cj 7. Everything works well but the Tcase is difficult to shift in and out of 4wd. Is this normal for a dana 300 or could something be wrong.? thanks

 

if lever and all linkage is okay, on a stick shift, my recollection is that you have to apply pressure to the shift lever just as you are releasing (slowly) the clutch; on an auto trans, you would apply pressure to the lever as the Jeep is rolling (slowly) and pop into neutral; sometimes even backing up (slowly) and kicking out of gear
this might take a little practice, so be patient
this is assuming that the drievtrain is in good mechanical shape and not bound up from driving/turning on hard packed surface while in 4wd
you might find it easier to unlock the hubs and then perform the above
