I want to swap my worn out SM420 for this NP435 that is for sale locally with adapter for $300.

I've seen this exact adapter on an NP435 before, mated to a D20 in a CJ5. Will that bull gear work on my large hole D18? Any other issues you guys notice?

i think the chevy dana 20's had the right bull gear, but if i remeber correctly (i don't often) that was the only one.

any chance the seller would let you compare the bull gear that's on it to the one you have?

according to the novak chart, only gears from blazer and bronco applications have the right gear count.

Trying to figure out if that one above is the 6.68 1st gear or 4.56 or 4.90. That looks like a 23 tooth 3rd gear to me but hard to tell.

Here's what Novak has to say.

    1st 2nd 3rd 4th (direct) Rev.
    NP435A (Dodge, GM) 4.56 2.28 1.31 1.00 5.64
    NP435L (Ford, Dodge, GM) 6.68 3.34 1.66 1.0 8.26
    NP435D (GM) 4.90 2.29 1.19 1.00 6.06
    NP435E (Ford) 6.68 3.34 1.74 1.00 8.26

There may be no tagging nor proper tag interpretation to know which version of the 435 one may have. However, if trying to identify by the third gear ratio, one should count the mainshaft third gear teeth; 23 teeth for 1.66:1, 24 teeth for 1.74:1 and 25 teeth for 1.31:1.

if you have money to do the adapting stuff, i know of an np435 from a '51 m37 in oregon that may be parted with for almost nothing...

Not so much the money issue, I need the GM version of the NP435 with this 1" thick adapter, otherwise it won't work for me. I have no idea who makes these adapters but this is the 2nd one I've seen.

in that case, i'd get it. i believe that is the right gear, but no clue where it'd be from. (looks like homemade)

it's got the right bull gear, and right pattern, so i'd go for it.

Maybe, I’m not sure. I think the GM version is the only one that has the short output shaft allowing for that thin spacer.

Has that output gear been welded? For the finer splines maybe. As long as it has the correct tooth count and and pitch id use it. For me the transmission looks slighty crusty inside and needs freshening up. Otherwise neat compact package.

Yup, that’s some funky cobbled together mess of an NP435. The bull gear was custom built, the adapter looks homemade, and I only see 4 mounting bolts for the t-case? Strength, gear straightness/balance, and oil sealing might be suspect, and replacement parts will be a custom affair. It’s one of those “I’d grab it for $20 just to get a closer look” deals.

That said, it also might last forever without issue, and the NP435 is my favorite of all the 4-spds. But $300 still sounds steep for a crusty hunk with a lot of unknowns.

Take your bull gear along and make sure the teeth count is the same and the gear pitches mesh. If not, walk.

I didn’t realize the bull gear had those splines welded into it . I’m a bit skeptical now.

Acknowledging that this post is getting long in the tooth, I'd like contact info for that NP435, assuming it's still available.
