I am having several problems with my 1970 Jeepster commando 225 odd fire dauntless. the carb is running really rich, even though I have the smallest jets I could find (carburetor mikes, .42 jets). I live at about 5800 feet, and almost everywhere we go to offroad is higher. I was thinking of getting a holley efi conversion kit. specifically this one:

Holley Sniper EFI 550-850K Holley Sniper EFI 2300 Self-Tuning Master Kit - Black Ceramic Finish

They also have a 4bbl one. Does anyone have any experience with these or something similar? I don't want to drop $1000 for something useless.

What do you have for a carburetor? 2 or 4 barrel? What do you have for Ignition?............at 6000 ft you need to burn the excess fuel..........So Jets are obvious..........as well as a hotter spark ( better Ignition system) and more advance in the timing to start the ignition sequence earlier is a good place to start.

Not really what you are asking in terms of the EFI - but I run my 225 with a R2g in Denver and all the way up to 13,000' and more with only 47 jets (seems like 48 is about perfect for Denver and a little above, but the 47s help with the highest elevations). I believe the original jeep recommendation for 5000' was 49 jets. I guess I am concerned that you might have something else going on with fuel supply if you are still running rich with 42s? I have had good success with 47 and 48 jets by advancing the timing quite a bit and running a slightly hotter plug.

Again, sorry that is not really what you are asking and I don't have much insight on the EFI. I know I have looked into quite a bit and at least two members here (Posi and Warloch) have had quite a bit of success with EFI set-ups (maybe others as well). There is a general concern of matching the system with the odd-fire tach signal, but that may be a bit overblown, as well as needing some sort of higher pressure fuel pump etc. good luck...and keep us posted if you go the EFI route...always hoping to go that route myself one day.

Yeah, check that the Holley system will work with the uneven firing pattern of the odd fire engine. I know that the Megasquirt will; not sure about the other available systems.

Is the carb float properly set? That is usually number one cause of rich condition.

Number two would be weak spark.

I run premium fuel in everything so I try for as much advance as can be tolerated without spark knock or ping. My 72 C20 PU with a .030 over SB 350 is set at a base timing around 24 degrees for example. I have an HEI and run the spark plugs at .045 gap.

Alright, I've made some progress. Timing was way off, I have it set to 10 degrees advance now, I got hotter spark plugs so I can adjust the jets or timing from clean ones. I also got a new battery, turns out the one that was in it from a while ago was too small. I also go a new fuel pump, other oreillys one was getting weak. I was able to drive it around, so massive progress with power. I'm thinking if I can get it going better I'll just skip the EFI and possibly upgrade the carb. right now it has the 2g Rochester. Once I get it road worthy I'll be able to get the jets and timing adjusted, I have to fix the brake lights and want to change all the fluids.

What should i gap the spark plugs at? right now its about .038 - .040.

OEM plug gap for the 225 is 0.035. If you are running a hotter coil, then you might want to move up to over 0.040. I don't run HEI, but I think that crowd has a lot larger gap (0.045-0.055 and maybe more in some cases).

Another consideration is the needle n seat not operating correctly. If it "leaks" just a bit it can run quite rich and mess with the mind.
