After my late brother left me his 45 year collection of tools as a aviation mechanic, ( Snap-On and Mac) plus the Snap-On tool chest along with my own 40 year collection of tools and chests, I decided to have all appraised for insurance reasons. Total appraisal came in at $46,550.00.

    Hey Mike ,
Liked the part about your Radial arm saw.
I have a 1964 Dewalt 8" radial arm saw that is as true as anything new.

Mine is a Craftsman 10" radial arm that was made in 1961, there isn't a plastic part anywhere on it. Still runs great, I have the drill chuck that came on it, it went on the opposite end of the motor spindle, it was a cool addition that apparently is pretty rare.

That is fantastic. It is slowly starting to happen with my wife; we have known each other for not quite four years now. At first it was "why do you need a truck?" and that became "so what will your next truck be?" after hauling a bunch of stuff. Then it was "why do you need two trailers?" then she moved in and started doing gardening and going with me to pick up soil, much, go to the yard waste landfill, etc and she stopped asking. I started an addition on our house a couple years ago and hardly bought any tools to get the job done; nearly finished now. She still thinks the garage has a lot of "stuff" that can be thrown out but in truth most of it is just disorganized tool chaos. When I can tackle that project I think she will finally "get it."

I desperately need more space to properly organize my stuff but when I do I will certainly catalog it for insurance purposes. Too many high-dollar things to lose.

Other than the mechanic work I do on our daily drivers to save money, my tools are mostly a 'relaxation and hobby' item. I know it, so does she. She does support me doing it as she knows I need a break and that's what I did with my father as a kid growing up. My boys all spent time learning in the shop, and it's served as a 'free speech zone' for the kids all around in the family and their friends over the years.

She has even said I can build a bigger shop when we move to the Salt Lake area :)

I make our money with the 'computer tools' I have in the house - couple servers and NAS items along with Cloud accounts - she still couldn't tell you what I do after all these years :D ... The shop lets me do some physical 'stuff' and exercise a different part of the brain for a while.

Growing up, my father pretty much never bought a tool until he absolutely needed it to fix something and then it was one socket/wrench at a time and as often as not JC Whitney. Maybe that was motive enough that I have never been shy buying what I actually needed, construction/wood working, machine tools, mechanic tools. About 60 years worth. Do I now need anything? No.

But a TIG unit would be really nice------------.

Dad was like this too - I bought the second set of sockets we had in the garage, when I was in HS and starting to build my own tool sets.

I have 2 sets of wrenches SAE and metric. I'm trying to keep a mentality that if I don't take it on a trail ride I don't need it. That basically means the garage is a shaded paved section of trail. the air compressor is just the same as a nearby rig with oba.

Yup. I love tools and hate not having what I need when I need. Of course my livelihood largely depends on tools.

Several years ago my son and his friend came walking up the drive to my shop. I overheard my son tell his friend, "between Dad (me) and Grandpa (my dad) they have every tool known to God".

Tools are Power. They give me the ability to look after myself and others.

    People without tools are dependent.

    That's a bit bold.
People without bought tools can still get the job done by being more resourceful or greatly skilled.

Back in Automotive School , our instructor said that a job requires 50 % tools, 25 % knowledge of how to use those tools, & 25% knowledge of the task.

I didn't say "bought" tools. I often make my own, or adapt, or improvise.

But what really separated us from being tree dwelling primates? Tools, I would say.

Without tools, even the wealthiest and most successful, resourceful, or otherwise skilled, among us are often rendered helpless by a leaky toilet or a flat tire. Then they realize they are dependent on someone with tools, regardless of their social power or financial status.

Tools free me of that vulnerability.

I figure if I have a job and need a tool, I buy it and I have it for life.
I've got 3 rolling chests full, still need more sometimes.

I enjoy being able to fix things with something I have available.
