Bellhousing on the engine or bellhousing on transmission? Stock F134/T90/T18.
When removing everything, we removed the transmission from the bellhousing. The fellow that is helping me, who has done this before favors the bellhousing on the engine.
    What say you?

Bellhousing on the transmission. It keeps the throw out bearing in place. Also couple of long studs to help guide it in.

X3 :iagree: It also helps to have the tranny in gear. That way you can turn the input shaft by turning the output shaft to line up the splines going into the clutch.

I mounted the BH on the tranny. Put it in gear, Lifted into place with my hoist and it slid right in. My CJ2A has a TO bearing carrier and ball mounted clutch fork that is completely inside the BH. Foe the sake of sanity, this was the BEST way to do it.

I have the bellhousing and starter already mounted on the engine. The F134 has an inspection opening on the top of the bellhousing I believe the clutch fork could be inserted thru. Is it possible to replace the transmission this way? I see the advantage with the bellhousing on the transmission with the aligning studs but my friend that is helping me has way more experience (and I don't want to antagonize) wants to do it that way.

Whatever works. If you drop the fork into the bottom of the BH, it is a PITA to retrieve it, unless you have someone with really small hands to help out. You can always default to pulling the BH and fitting it from the front.

Well, we installed it as my friend wanted. Bellhousing on the engine. I got the transmission/transfer case/crossmember/skidplate unit balanced on the floor jack and put some industrial zip ties to sort of secure it. Up it went. Partway in we got the clutch yoke in with no trouble. Put some longer bolts in the transmission to pull it foreward until the regular bolts would start. Took about 2 hours of pushing and wiggling until the crossmember bolts were secure and the jack removed..

Glad you got it installed. I gotta agree with the bellhousing on the transmission however, much easier in my book.

I think so too. In retrospect, I think I would make a couple of studs and thread them into diagonal corners on the rear of the bellhousing to help guide it in.
