    Hi All,
I'm trying to learn about Jeep production numbers. I'm working with a 72 CJ5 renegade. It has the 304 v8 and is Renegade Plum. The only info I've found so far is that 22601 Jeeps were made in 1972. No breakdown of engine options, colors or trim variants. Is that the way Jeep did it back then or is there a resource for this type of info?
    Thanks everyone![IMG]

Cool Jeep! 22,000 seems pretty low for what must have been Jeep's biggest seller in 1972. I assume your number is from here - Jeep Production Dates, Models, & Numbers
Unlikely any more finely divided records survive, but maybe.

wondering if above the battery there is still the trim decal that remains, also the radiator core should have some stamped number with a letter, I must say a exceptional find indeed.

Ok, the tag above the battery is missing, there are some scratches where it looks like someone scraped off the trim decal. There is a number on the core support that looks stenciled in black. I'm not in front of the jeep right now but I believe that it reads "313". I'll double check tomorrow. As well there is on the left side of the core support there seems to be a letter "R" that looks to be painted on probably before the body color was sprayed. It's hard to see, but it is there.

thank you for the pics. yours is the 34,226 vehicle off the assembly line in march 13 1972, mine is 6261 sept 1971, i am of the opinion jeep manufactured over 50,000 plus the this yr. I noted that in one of the pics you have even the air injection emission system still intact. Does your still have the emission sticker on the radiator support as well. curious what kind of heater control does your have. I understand that 1972 was a one off for a number of things and the heater controls is one. My request for pics of the wiring is do to mine is so messed up and the TSM(technical service manual does not provide one for our yr jeep. I also understand our yr dash was a one off as well. thanks for the pics

I'll take pics of the dash and heater controls tomorrow. If I recall right the heater control is just a cable turned by knob. This jeep had an add on AC system installed when it was new. But my buddies dad and brother in law removed it in the last couple years. So I don't know exactly how perfect all that stuff is.

I really like the fact you have the original v8 emblem on the drivers side fender, picture of wiring of the amp gauge and oil pressure would be nice, curious how many miles on odometer, was this gem in a garage , hard to believe it has been in the weather for 50 yrs. A museum piece for me, does it run?

mrtii, yes it runs. we've been in possession of it two weeks yesterday. We put a new fuel pump and fresh gas and it ran. Then we rebuilt the carb, cleaned and gapped the plugs and we drove it a bunch in our neighborhood. Runs really nice.

This is an interesting picture. It appears that a worker at the factory modified the wiring by hand to install the Renegade oil pressure gauge and ammeter. These gauges were available with the earlier Dauntless Rengade and Renegade II packages, and I assume that's how this was done then. Makes me wonder if Kaiser Jeep was truly under-capitalized by circumstance, or if Kaiser was skidding it along, looking for for a way to shed the division.

There are several places where the harness uses those crimp on connectors if that is what you are referring to. I'd say they are original as all of them that I have inspected have very nice crimping. They weren't crimped on with the average tool you buy at the parts stores.
