I'm trying to get some ideas of where people have mounted jerry cans on their Jeeps. I have a 74 CJ5 with the tire mounted on the side of the original steel tub with a tailgate. Almost everything is original and I'm trying to keep it that way. I want to try to avoid mounting it on the tailgate as that would limit its usage. I was thinking on the driver's side of the body opposite the spare tire using the pre-drilled holes for (I'm assuming) the shovel holder; or possiblly forward of the driver/passenger door on the body.

Your thoughts and pics are appreciated...

Mmm. There are no pre-drilled holes on that side that I am aware of.

I'm not a big fan of mounting jerry cans anywhere. If you want more capacity, MTS sells an oversized rear tank that reduces the breakover angle some, 15 -> 21 gallons. Or you could install the pre-70 tank under the seat, for an additional 11 gallons.

Agree with Tim. Jerry cans are not conducive to good outcomes in just about any sort of collision-sort of like that WWII film clip of a MB (or GPW?) with the flamming butt. I used them on the rear for a couple of decades but never did feel good about them. One rear ended job and you REALLY are toast. A bigger tank is the best solution.

What the heck? Where I go with this thing not to many people will hit me in the back end....."famous last words"
Plus, the whole thing swings out so you can get to the stuff in the back. On the side around here, there are alot of trees to go through and around sometimes there is tight spots the gas can can catch on...... This carrier is home made from some metal around the shop. It is locks on the driver side and spins on a 1 inch solid tube welded to the bumper.

Yeah, a swing-away can rack seems like the least-bad solution, if you must have cans.

It was easier back in mid-century; tires were smaller, and you could mount the cans without blocking the lights. The old Kayline can/tire racks were quite popular.

I searched for images and found this thread: http://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-serie...ar-tire-jerry-can-carrier-need-some-help.html - the Jeep carriers were similar.

Where I go is usually well off the beaten path also, but there is also usually 40 to 70 miles of highway before that path. All it takes is one text message while you are sitting behind someone waiting making a left turn. I almost got it once, but the driver at least had enough sense/time to hit the ditch. You should make no assumptions about other drivers-there are more than a few that should have never been issued a license-one of them is my neighbor.R) At least in that case, I totally know what to expect.

There are no holes in that indent towards the top of the body at the driver rear quarter panel?? Anywho, if you go the under seat route, would you run another gas line, kind of like a reserve? And I guess I'd have to cut out the indent for the filler hose or whatever? I wish I knew about the bigger rear tank when I replaced mine last year.

I installed an under-seat tank in my '73, back in the day. You mount it just the same as the tank mounts in the earlier Jeeps. The filler neck insert that goes in the body is available separately - I just cut a hole in the body, glued in the part, and painted it with touch-up paint. You'll need a valve of some type to switch between the under-seat tank and the rear tank.

At least your not sitting on your fuel tank.:) I have a Jerry can on the back of the 3b and also have the stock under seat tank. If I think of safety to much there's no way I should ever be driving this Jeep. My under seat tank runs dry all the time, it's really nice to have the reserve. I how ever do not use my Jeep for commuting it's a back road Jeep.

If you still have a drawbar, you could build a bolt on drawbar jerrycan holder like did on mine. I put a pin in it to make it easily removable for the tailgate.

Thats a winner right there... both the can mount and the jeep!
I'm gonna use that mount idea as a basis for a double can mount that may even be able to hinge downward with the tailgate. Hmmm...

I did consider collisions in my design. That's why I mounted it higher. A trade off with CG. I have in the past removed the rack and lashed tire & cans inside the bed anticipating rougher terrain. I don't fill the cans when flat towing or highway driving until the last reasonable chance for gas.
