My 7 year old and I went for some rides around "da hood" this past weekend...the grin on his face was almost has big as mine! He loves it and its worth every bloody knuckle i'm putting into it.

Speaking of bloody knuckles, apparently I'm going to perform the engine conversion to the 225. Mrs. Michigan_pinstripes has advised Mr. Michigan_ pinstripes that one of the three engine/trans/t-case combos in the garage has to go (what she doesn't realize is that he will quickly fill this space with other jeep stuff).

Any who, I'm beginning the planning for my winter project of swapping out the 4 cyl w/a Dauntless 225. Reviewed the info on the "V6 references link"..(really appreciate this stuff).

Phase one is to disassemble the engine, trans and t-case to assess their condition(s). Not planning on any performance enhancements unless someone can convince me that its in my best interest to do so (this is a family jeep).

    Any suggestions/hints, etc are appreciated.

No, Bill gets offended whenever someone removes an F-head for a V6.

My point was you have an L-head.

Just ignore us and go along your merry way and enjoy the V6. ;)

    Jerry,

What are you going to do with the L head. I have a friend with a 48 that might be interested.

Ya - V6 Flatties are cool...

Options to consider (basing it on what you listed and what I do)
    1. Dual Res Master Cyl
    2. 11" on all 4
    3. Saginaw Steering
    4. You got the OD
    5. Full Cage and belts? (esp in back for the kids/dog).

It's not a tough swap if you take a little time.

I essentially have everything in the garage to do this including a bigger radiator and the AA motormounts. Need the crossover pipe but I have a lead on that locally.

Time to clear it out!!! A CJ5 frame may just fit sideways behind Putt Putt for buildup!!

We just put a single cylinder Wilwood MC on his with the 11" fronts -- nearly puts you through the windshield!!

Yeah, she stopped asking "now what is that Jeep for?" ;)

She knows the long term plan on my CJ5 project but little does she know that I plan to accelerate the plan a bit. 8) Like Boyink, I want a nice roadworthy rig that she is comfortable driving around as a second car. She likes manual transmissions so that is not a problem. She doesn't drive Putt Putt because it is pretty primitive and too tall ;) It will remain a 4-cyl trail rig.

The L head won't be expensive. Assuming your buddy is in the GR area, i'm sure we can get it to him (I was raised in Muskegon and my brother and parents still live there).

At this point, I believe I'll start actual swap during the early Winter months.

P.S. If you guys happen to plan a day event, please PM me. I would like to join ya.

    * Installed a single res and it works great (so far). guess I should have opted for the dual..
    * Letting the skin heal from the brake fluid and bloody knuckles front the front before I start the rear conversion. Have all of the parts in the bedroom,,,I mean garage.
    * Jeep came w/the Saginaw steering gear. Steers great w/no wondering!
    * Came w/OD. Its a six speed. Wonder if the OD works in reverse?
    * The cage.. Any suggestions on the full cage set-up? I'm really clueless about design options and if there are kits available, or is it 100% fabrication work? Also wondering if the rollbar should be welded to the frame for "extra" safety. We won't be traveling fast, but you just never know. I got hit by a drunk drive in my '78 cj5, and endo'ed my '81 cj7 on the expressway during a snow storm.

Also looking for 2 more 5 point harness/belts if anyone has some (forget the dog, I don't like it....and a new one is only $35 at the local pound)

Yup - the Warn OD works in all gears. Cage for the old ones is best fabricated so it fits with the windshield good. There are pros and cons to attaching to the frame. My new direction is to build the seat frames into the cage to give the people the most protection. I have seen several rip off the body and have had one wrapped around me (3 endos and 7 sideways down a 500 foot cliff/hill - they cut me out with a torch - just some snot mud, balled up tires with chains and less than 20 mph). You never know when you'll need it.

Would you believe they actually make a harness for dogs that attach to seatbelts?
