How much noise do the military ndt tires make on hard surface compared to
mud and snow type tires ?
In my experience they're a lot quieter.
This is of course balanced out by the screaming noises you make when trying to brake on wet surfaces.
The NDT that were on Willie when I got him made me very nervous, then I went out when the road was wet and wet my pants. The next week or so I got Goodyear Duratracs. Instantly felt better and stopped buying Depends.
I daily drove my 2a with ndts rain or no.
I never crashed and I didn’t think twice about going slower than advertised speed limit.
Off-road I thought they were pretty dang good considering I could out wheel my buddy who had buckshot II’s and a locker.
Would buy again but my 3b wouldn’t look right with them. Gateway buckshots for the B
I think both traction and noise with NDTs depends upon the pressure you run them at.
It is my belief they need to be aired way down to "dig in" with the corner lugs when off road. On highway, at full pressure, they ride on the center rib and are quite slippery.
Hoe many different types of NDTs are there?
NDT stands for non directional tread. There are many tires that fall into this category. The OP was asking about the military ones specifically.
I know that but isn't there a NATO version of the NDTs used on jeeps?

& NDCC (non-directional cross country)
Most people don't see the difference & call NDCC's NDT's.
just like anything else you just have to know what you are driving and react accordingly..
for my taste, I like a more modern tire on anything that sees highway speed regularly..
On road noise level of an NDT is very similar to the traditional mud and snow designs
Ok, call me stupid.. I actually have the NDCC tires. I noticed more noise when I changed from the mud and snow tires to these.
They are aired down to 25 lbs. They actually drive and steer better than what was on it before. Does not sling gravel like the mud and snow
tires did, which sounded like driving through a hail storm. Off road traction is lots better too, in mud an red clay.
I don't know if I would call that "down." Lot of pressure for a very light vehicle like a Jeep.
In fact I think that was normal pressure specced by the military.
Fwiw I ran around 30-28 psi. Never did air down for off-road; still don’t unless I think I have to.
I always ran 15lbs on my NDTs on and offroad, I got better wear with the lower pressure.
