I have had an idea about changing my turn signal setup, and I'd like to bounce it off of some saner heads.

I remember that, back in NYC, the older buses had turn signals that were foot operated. On the floor, there were a pair of switches, and they looked a lot like the old head light dimmer switch:

They're SPST and momentary, so that when you step down, they engage and when you release, they turn off.

By making this change, I can do away with the existing Sparton stem mounted from the steering column. The rubber wheel that does the signal cancellation won't play any further part in the process.

Haven't figured out yet whether I want to drill the holes and mount these through the floorboard or to make a tiny box, install these and then mount the box to the floor (at least that way, I don't have to worry about weatherproofing).

Any opinions? Have I completely jumped the shark on this one?

Anything mounted to or near the floor will eventually fail at least in any Jeep I have. I mounted the dimmer to the bottom of the dash to help.

I don't think I'd want foot operated turn signals in a manual trans vehicle, my feet are already busy enough!

If you are set on moving the switch off the column, I would suggest a toggle such as Focker's set up, but mounted on the shifter where your hand is already located. You could use an intermittent switch which would require constant pressure to engage or a standard one which would need to be manually turned off.

The way I am feeling lately, it'll go back into service.

This jeep build is now over one year in the making (you can see the fun in my other LONG thread), and I am getting to the point where I should get the dang thing on the road before I consider upgrading anything further.

I agree, i haven't had the best luck with switches on the floor boards. I just had another issue with my floor mounted Hi-Beam switch between the water and mud the switch is bound to fail at some point.
