I pulled my F head pan to replace the gasket and i found this in the bottom nestled under the drain plug. At first I thought it was a magnet or something as it was stuck in place and covered in sludge. It is not magnetic, but it doesn't look like i am missing anything from above and the engine runs fine. Anyone recognize it?

Looks like a piece off of the fuel pump arm. Some of them had a piece that slides on the arm. Have you replaced your fuel pump?

Yup, fuel pump arm slider. Not all versions use this but pull you pump & see it it's missing.

super curious...i would think with that missing the pump arm wouldnt contact the eccentric and there would be no fuel pumped...no running engine...then again my engine is in parts so ive nothing to base that on:cry:

I agree with the thinking, but I don't know what the result would be. Maybe still enough action to pump fuel?

I found the same piece in my oil pan when I replaced the gasket last fall. But I'm not running the original pump I have a single action glass bowl pump.

I'm thinking it's from an old pump, having the slide fall off would at the very least result in low flow/pressure.

i guess if a pump failed in the past because that fell off and was replaced without knowing the the reason...i could see that

Thanks for all the info! I'm willing to bet this is correct. The previous owner said he replaced the fuel pump a while ago. I think i have the old one in a box. Ill check it out. Ill probably pull the current pump just to check to make sure everything is working correctly.

It isn't all there, what held it on is missing. I do agree it looks different than the one you showed. I've got an old pump off of the 226 that is like the one you showed.

One thing is for certain, the part that is left on the fuel pump wouldn't be very friendly to the cam lobe.
