This is the absolute closest I can get to the oem 3/8" wide whitewall G70-15 Load Range B Belted Custom Wide Tread Polyglas Goodyear. See pics below of the oem tire. Below that is a screenshot of the tire that can be had now.

My thought is that they make a paint that I could apply to the red stripe in order to make it absolutely correct, or would you just run the red stripe?? All thoughts welcome please!

The Firestone Wide Ovals from Coker have the right look, but may be the wrong brand for your restoration:

If the originals were Goodyears, you should probably paint the red stripe white since the rest of your Jeep is going to be so original.

This is the question I should have posted here. This is what I put up on book of faces.

Hobbes restoration. Need your thoughts on oem tire replacement for car shows only. Most of you have seen my other post regarding the two sets of tires for Hobbes. I have finally been able to nail down the exact tire used on the Renegade1's, (see pics below of press photo, and two pics from a friend that has the original oem tires from his Ren1 to confirm) The OEM tire is a GOODYEAR POLYGLAS G70/15 CUSTOM WIDE TREAD WITH 3/8" WIDE WHITEWALL. Here is my question to everyone. (See last pic) Kelsey Tires makes this exact tire with one exception. It is the red stripe instead of the white stripe. Would you run it the way it is and have something that is the closest thing possible with the exception of the color, or would you get the white paint they make for whitewalls and lettering and make it white? The only other option is the Firestone G70/15. EVERYTHING about it is correct except it is a Firestone not a Goodyear. My personal opinion is this. I am thinking like the Corvette Club of America judging. Both of these tires are 100% correct for 1971. Both of them could be purchased in 71. Therefore the Firestone has the correct look and era for judging and eliminates the possibility of screwing up $1800 worth of tires trying to get a good coverage of white over a red stripe. My vote is the Firestone.... But I really want to hear all of your thoughts on this. So the dilemma is... The Goodyear is correct except for the color of the stripe and the Firestone is correct except for the manufacturer. What say everyone.

Since you're doing a few other period mods like the Dualmatic hubs and Warn winch, I don't see why the Firestone tires wouldn't be appropriate. It's something you would likely see on an almost new Renegade back in the early 70s.

I would lean towards going with the Firestone as well. If you were to go to the (significant) trouble to re-paint the red stripe on the Goodyears white, but couldn't get perfect coverage, or unintentionally colored outside the lines at all - as even a little bit would show - that could potentially count against you if your Jeep is being judged.

If you do decide to go with the Goodyears, though, here's an article I found that details one man's solution for how to mask off and paint whitewalls:

Cheap Wide Whitewalls (revisited) using "White Tire Paint"

Thank you James, Maury and Roy for the input. I am waiting for a call back from Kelsey this morning on the possibility of getting the GY's with a white stripe. If it turns out to be a no (I am sure it will because of tooling and one off) and as bad as I want the GY's, then I will go with the Firestone's (other than the name they are identical) and be done with it. I think that we all agree that the "spirit" of obtaining originality will have been met. I also will not be entering any Concourse events so this should never even come up as an issue.

UPDATE: Talked with Kelsey Tires and it is a hard no lol. Firestone's here I come ;)

I think you're making the right choice here, Eric.

Since both Goodyear Suburbanites and Firestone Town & Country tires were factory-installed on CJ's of various vintages (see Copy of Firestone Town & Country Tire in 7.00-15 ) it's certainly not out of the question that the Ren 1's could likewise have come shod with Firestones in some cases.

In any case, I strongly suspect that you probably know more about original Ren 1 tires than just about any car show judge out there! ;)

Maury, I want the Goodyears so bad I can taste it. However, I am not confident enough in how well coloring over the red stripe will turn out. Anything less than perfect coverage (smoothness and within the lines) will be unacceptable and costly at $1800 for a set of 5. So the Firestone's it is lol

I've gotta admit, in this case I would go big or go home.
Having the correct tread pattern and the correct name on the tire is worth it.
I'd leave them as red stripes, but painting them to a white stripe is nothing like the process linked on HAMB.
When a colored stripe is manufactured in a tire, there is a thick layer of colored rubber molded into the tire, with a 'coverstrip' of black rubber over it.
After the tire is cured, the tire goes thru a process called 'rib grind' where the black rubber is ground away in the area where the stripe is desired.
So painting a red stripe white I would be more worried about the stripe turning pink after a few months, or the silicone used to prevent chatter of the grinding stone causing the paint to fisheye. So the red stripe is in a groove in the black sidewall that makes it easy to paint.

NEVER take a razor blade to cut the sidewall of a tire!

I'm a big fan of Kelsey Products and do quite a bit of business with them. I've got 4 sets of the 6:00-16 NDT's and am very happy with them.

Thank you for your input. Even after saying I would go with the Firestone I am still struggling with what to do as I agree with you on the name and tread. Personally I think that you are right and the stripe would not look right painted. I have an issue with the whole red stripe look though. On my 71 LS5 Vette it would work as that is what they used on it back in 68-69 ish. But on the Jeep... Not so sure

My Vette 1971 LS5 454, 4spd close ratio, 355 rear end. I am running the Kelsey RWL (what this car came with) however the red stripe on this would look badass ;) not so sure it would on the jeep
