nothing to over heat in my pto, mine is the one that just comes straight out the back like for the pto on agrijeeps, just a shaft, housing two bearings, a slider gear and a yoke. the rest is homemade, looks like a roll back set up

well its all in the winch its self, small gear running inside of 3 gears running inside of a large gear, the small gear runs inside of 3 small gears placed equall apart kinda like 2, 10 and 6 o'clock that run on the inside of a larger gear that drives the spool

I understand planetary gearing, it's just the 90 deg turn that confuses me.
Just a pinion gear set up?

Better than some sites I've seen, less chance of a virus too.

kinda like that , worm gear works in what is called a bull gear, same effect just different, teeth are much more course, and the bull gear is usually made of brass, ring and pinnion are far more superrior, but more expensive to make, and the tollerances are tighter, with the hyd setup there is no need for the 90 deg with the planetary set up, but they do make them boath ways, the drawback with planetary is the auto brake, the worm setup works better for power out

OK, got it, was still thinking of the rear winch set up with a drive shaft.
You have the same type winch used on tow trucks, cranes etc., thus the planetary set up.
Just had to think a little more modern.
