Does this look like a Petronix system to anybody? The Orange Crate runs really good but I still have a partialy burned fuel smell when I drive around. I rebuilt the YF carb and does pretty good too on concrete. I'm thinkin the second pic of the tail pipe the PO installed may have something to do with it. What do Y'all think? The 1 1/2" tail pipe is flaired to fit inside the exhaust end of the muffler.

Possible. Not Jeep, but the distributor will work with many different modules. Follow the wires. Look at a '78 or later Jeep wiring diagram for examples.

Thanks timgr. Your pic looks exactly like it. I'm wondering if possibly I could have burned that thing up. I recently left the key on in the run possition and left town for 4 days, now nothing works. No lights, heater fan, will not turn over, battery fully charged. At one time, maybe during my leave, alot of brown sticky stuff leaked out. Could be from the past as the alternator relay had done the same thing at one time (replaced new). I'm not exactly shure how to check it w/ my multimeter. Thanks again for all past and hopefuly future help.

Any comments on the 1 3/8s" I.D. tail pipe. Not exactly a stock application and restrictive IMO. Anyone?

It's either no fuel or no spark. I presume you added a little fuel to the carb and it did not start.

Next step is to check and see if there is any spark when cranking. If not, check the pickup coil in the distributor for continuity (see '79 TSM on the OlJeep site). Unplug/clean/plug the connectors and grounds. See if the ignition coil makes a spark. Check that there is power to the module with the key on. If it all checks out, it's likely the module by elimination.

This is probably it. 1980 DODGE RAMCHARGER 5.2L 318cid V8 Ignition Control Module (ICM) | RockAuto Not expensive. Likely why it was used in the first place.

No idea about the tailpipe. Should be 1.75" or 2" IIRC. My V8 is 2" but it's custom. Prior to the caalytic convertors ('75ish on) the tail pipe was the same for all intermediate CJs, regardless of engine or wheelbase.

I don't have any electrcity going to the starter motor at all so I can't turn over the engine to check for spark. I'll try the other checks to see if the voltage stops somewhere and the continuity. Interesting the PO decided to neck down the TP dimensions.

OK thx timgr, I'll try em.

If the battery is good, it should crank the engine. If not, you have to start there. Bypass the ignition switch to the starter solenoid and see if the engine cranks. Be careful you you don't accidentally start the motor or run yourself over! Remove the starter and see if it runs on the shop floor. Cranking first, then ignition.
