Look for the parts to an M38A1. You can find NOS stuff and useable take-offs on evilbay, or the military vendors. It's almost bolt up stuff to a CJ, but much stouter.

I just fixed this same problem on my 59. I bought a new usa made pedal shaft and a nos m38a1 pedal shaft bracket on ebay. Now mine is perfect with zero side slop. I also had to buy a nos brake pedal arm because it was worn out too. And that's all I had to change. About $100 in parts and I'm much happier now

Jeep actually had a kit available that tightened up the end play on the shaft. But you probably need new parts or at least bushings.

I purchased a mix of omix and crown parts. I actually had to hone out the brake pedal arm a bit so that it didn't depress the clutch. Zero slop side to side.

I replaced the worn parts on my brake system in my 48 cj2a and my 59 cj5. on both they needed a new pedal shaft bracket on the fram and a new pedal shaft and both had a good clutch pedal arm since it is pinch bolted on so it doesn't move to create play. but both jeeps needed the brake pedal arm replaced because it moves on the shaft and makes the large bore on the bottom of the brake pedal arm even larger creating side to side play.

but what did the most good or the most difference on my 59 cj5 was the pedal shaft bracket that is riveted to the frame. mine was terrible and if you have someone operate the pedals while your watching under the jeep you should be able to see what will be needed most, if you just want better not necessarily perfect or if budget is tight.

I shimmed mine up with some steel from a spray paint can. and added more washers on the sides to help keep them straight. It works fine
