Well in the up state South carolina we get snow from time to time. Now i was goin' home one day, close to being dark with about 1 1/4" of fresh snow on the roads. I was in a short straight away, thought I didn't need to slow down alotand the next thing I know I'm sliding sidways across the road into a ditch and taking out 3 mail boxes before I roll on to my top. Oh S#*t was all I could think. Now are these the kind of driving conditions to watch out for? Now I might have been playing just alittle. There I confesed. But it was fun up until I had 3 mail boxes in the back of the jeep with me, right behind my head at that. schardein, I understand what your saying about setting the vehicle up for what you are gonna' be runnin' into, good advice. ;) But we've fixed thje jeep since my little roll in the snow and I don't play in the snow anymore.

As mentioned above, I have a Detroit Locker in the rear. Now, I have never owned a vehicle with a "Locker" of any kind in the rear. The last 4 vehicles I have owned all had "Limited Slips" in them as does my Yukon now.

I have known prople that had "Detroits" in the rear and heard of the jproblems on "slick" streets. So, soon after I got my Jeep it rained here. So I took it out to a very large parking lot about a quarter mile form me with NO light posts. I started out making a turn like I was making a right turn at an intersection. I applied a "normal" amount of torque and guess what--A Donut!! Well after having fun doing 3-4 of them, I tried it using miniumal torque. Better, but still started to slide if I didn't catch it.

Now one thing you have to remember is that in the Detroit, if you don't lock it by applying sufficent torque, it drives the INSIDE wheel only, the outside wheel gets no power. This is what can get you in troble in a hurry on slick streets if you don't know what is happening.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love the Detroit, especially since the PO paid for it! :) And, it doesn't rain that much here in Havasu. And 99% of the off-roading I do here, the Detroit will power me thru it without engaging 4WD. :)

Now under youre signature it says you have a Lockrite I believe. And you say the Detroit keeps you going 99% of the time before engaging 4wd, Jim that Lockrites gonna' last forever. I actually called Richmond Gear that makes the Power Trax and Lock Right and the guy recomended the Lock Right up front, he said it's not gonna' be engaged unless I need it anyway. And to go with the Power Trax in the rear, said it was driver friendly and easy to get used to. And the other reason for the lock right up front was the price, he couldn't quote me any but the Power Trax cost a little more, so why not save some money and go with the lock right up front when that time comes.

Duke: I totally agree. Now remember, this is the way I bought my Jeep. If I was doing it, I would install a Detroit "Electrac" in the rear. It's a gear driven LS with an electric locker. But, since I've already got them, I'll keep them and be happy.

I've never had any problems with the Lockright in the front. A couple of times it got "stiff" to unlock the hubs, but I just backed up about 10' and everything was OK.

All in all, I think a Lockright in the front is fine.

Duke are you thinking just front now?
My advice is dont do it.
Put the rear in. We dont get that much snow here in the mid south to worry about that.
I agree the No Slip is the way to go in the rear. Less harsh than a Loc Right.

No, not gonna do any thing with the front as of now. Just goin' with the No-Slip in the rear. If everything works out I hope to have it in by middle of next month. I think since I've been talkin' with you guys on the forum about these different kinds of lockers I'm startin' to understand.
Thanks for all you're help. Duke
