I am almost finished with the rear brakes, when i put the brake adjuster on fully closed it spreads the brakes out and the drum does not fit. Take it the brake adjuster the drum fits fine, the brake adjuster is 3 inches long, all new parts. This is a dana 44 axle. I will post some pictures on the build shortly

Is the adjustment gear lined up with the access hole in the backing plate?

did you leave out a word or two in the second sentence?

either the adjuster is the wrong one, or you have assembled the brakes incorrectly.

also, the parking brake bar can be incompletely seated in its grooves, preventing the shoes from retracting.

Yes, post a picture of the assembled brakes. The shoes also need to be centered side-to-side on the backing plate, or the drum will not go on. Make sure you have the right parts - compare new shoes to old, and any new parts to old. Use the picture in the TSM as a reference for putting things together. There is an arrow pointing forward in the picture - left is the mirror image of the right. Make sure the shoes tighten when you lift the lever and the pawl turns the star wheel. If not, it's not put together right.
