I can't believe the jeep has been down for a whole year.
The good news is I got everything but the pressure plate from the balance shop yesterday. he strives for a zero balance and spent a few days cussing the 85 4.3 I knew it was going to be interesting when he called to verify it was non balance shaft engine, then again, and again. he needed to weld the holes in the crank from the factory balance to add weight, luckily it was a flat rate quote

yesterday i also got to work on my oil pan skid plate, 1/8" plate. welding the plate to the pan will be fun I'm thinking of filing the pan with water while i weld the plate on. and I'm debating on a 1.5" hole on the side where there is a gap between the pan and plate (keep the oil a little cooler in summer and possibly placing a 200w magnet heater in there) or leaving it solid to keep it from filling with dirt. I drilled a pilot hole and I'm keeping an eye out for 1.5" well plugs.
then today i put the short block back together
    [IMG]
and all the tin and heads are royal blue (just for the ford fans)
balance shop feels fine with the 1500-5500rpm powerband as long as I'm not beating the plow in curbs,
needless to say I'm (insert profane language here) Excited!!!
gonna fire up the lathe/dremel jig with the FIL and grind them valves.

well grinding the valves in the home shop didn't work out so well, we tried a valve from the old engine and... well it won, a dremel stone is just not strong enough. so instead i used this on all 12 valves.
then i lapped them all back home (time consuming with hardened seats)
I figure i will swap out to vortec heads in the long run so i didn't spend much on the heads, just new seals. (nothing was cracked)
every valve changed note from ting to thunk. a little dye was used to verify a good seal. so i went ahead and tossed them together, and torqued them to the block.
the book is a little odd with the valve lash adjustment it says to use 50 to 125in/lbs on the adjustment nut and that doesn't get them to stop wiggling. The valves train is all assembled so I lugged the cast iron quadrajet intake back on. (that thing is heavy!) it has the intake manifold gaskets and rtv on the front/rear but it's not torqued down yet. (my back hurt)
so to change pace i fired up the buzz box and went to weld up my seams. fitted the plate to the pan all lined up perfect, got the first corners done and realized it was attached to the pan  so the inside of the plate won't have any paint because it is one with the pan. (going to go ahead and clean it at school. I'm thinking a can of spray on bed liner for the plate but that will cover my purdy welds...
how does this look? (did i get enough/too much welded?).

Not trying to jump your thread but I noticed you were trying to make some improvements to your pan..................here is what I did to a Buick V6 pan years ago...........added a quart and a half and with the baffle inside kept oil at the pickup.
    Good luck on your project.

    your fine, that is interesting.
my skid doesn't add any volume, I just added some insurance, the holes are to help keep it cool and I want to squeeze a 200 watt heater between the pan and plate for winter. I also don't want the oil getting any hotter than normal in the summer with the skid plate blocking most of the air that would cool the pan. as 4.3s are normally equipped with an external oil cooler. with the 3.3 I was always concerned about it's soft belly. I've got a little more into this engine.

I did find the cause of the 3.3s ruined main bearings. I had a bad pressure plate. it was 40grams out of balance. so it was a great idea to balance, the pressure plate was about to be used on this engine.

    status update.
I need to rework the frame side of the engine mounts. this engine is heavy, and tall.
as of now the 4.3 is hanging on a hoist, getting the transmission adapter concentric is taking some time (right now it off center 0.004 which might be ok)
I had a clearance issue with the brake lever on the 200ci. There is a little massaging on this block that i need to show. mostly rounding some rough edges that catch the brake pedal as it returns. (nothing important)

I'm stuck on how to get the vacuum lines set up. This engine was on a stand when i bought it, I have no idea how to rig the egr to pass inspection.
The pcv, dual action pump, and vac wipers which will mock the old f-134. now the worst part is i don't know the quadrajet vacuum ports for the previous or the 2 pots on the quadrajet and the pot for ignition vacuum advance.
    :?
the engine does have two temperature related valves on the intake and a larger vac actuated valve. (i think mostly for the Computer Controlled Carb) i'm running a rebuilt pontiac quadrajet and as far as the inspection is concerned the engine is from a boat.

I think i have the emissions and vacuum lines figured out,
    I found this http://www.gtoforum.com/attachments...t-book-help-me-convert-quadrajet-scan0001.jpg on http://www.gtoforum.com/f50/who-has-best-book-help-me-convert-quadrajet-30529/
which gives me: (correct me if I'm wrong)
    1. air cleaner mini filter to valve cover
    2. PCV valve in opposite valve cover to manifold
    3. distributor to manifold... or is it ported?
    4. vacuum pump out to manifold (vacuum brake port looks perfect)
    5. vacuum pump in to wiper motors
    6. EGR to temperature controlled valve
    7. manifold to temperature controlled valve (do i need the valve if i run ported as in the link?)
    8. heat stove diaphragm on intake to intake air valve
    9. intake air valve to manifold
    10. there is a vac port on the automatic choke. i think it needs manifold vacuum but i don't remember

that should give everything a purpose, i doubt I'll have an issue about not having the vacuum canister for the fuel when there is no provision on the fuel tank.

well you cannot run a duel action vacuum pump with the f-134 frame horns on the frame and a mustang radiator.
so out went the old frame horns, and I'm making some new horns for the 4.3 and a firewall battery box.
this will also allow more room for the hydraulic pump and york compressor to fit.

    well it finally runs!
no video, didn't have any accessories so i couldn't run it long, and it seems to need carburetor cleaned out. because it ran out of gas in the bowl
likely the wrong fuel filter but I'll pull it out of the carburetor and run an ugly large clear paper filter before the carb instead.
in the fabrication department i need to make a 55 chevy v8 generator mount, a York AC compressor mount and a hydraulic pump mount.
I need to run lines for the vac wipers, pump is now on the wrong side of the engine ;) and pcv lines for that matter
there are a bunch of vac pots without lines on the carb
and i also need to find a nice spot for the remote oil filter then get real oil lines made.
also need to make a lot of heat shields, new fresh air intake duct, and a cooler air intake through the snorkel cut out.

you can always tell when a project gets finished or abandoned because the thread gets abandoned.
in this case I've been enjoying the drive. To fix the brake issue I managed to shimmy the engine to the passenger side by adjusting the lower radiator hose.
I still need to go with 11" drums and a dual master cylinder.
here are some pics with accessories:

a video for proof of movement, don't mind the T-90 and D18 are singing, but you can hear a little 4.3 rumble.
and if you are curious a 2nd engine temp is beside the cluster, tachometer is on the column, oil pressure is next to the heater controls.

time to look at cleaning a few things up.this is mostly to motivate myself but if it is posted i gots to get it done. (wife permitting) and most of it is little stuff

    the to-do list:
    1. 11in Brakes with dual master... on hold, i need to do it all at once.
    2. steering... looking at the tapered roller bell crank, i just need to find a big enough lathe that can swing it
    3. 12si alternator... i still have the hurricane's generator with hei, fogs, headlights, electric fuel pump, two heaters and
    4. Electric radiator fan... ever get the passenger front on a stump and hear a tinny buzz not good for lower hoses
    5. a real hydraulic pump mount... it's sideways, i should fix that.
    6. OBA..? not today, but someday
    7. windshield defrost duct... just $$$ and waiting on rewiring the dash
    8. rebuild a wiper motor... it passed inspection last time with the help of the thumb lever
    9. rewire the dash, and lights, and engine... fire bad, fuses & relays good.
    10. fix the floor boards... i shouldn't be able to adjust the clutch thru the floor.
    11. mount the 2nd heater... it's the guts of an 85 chevy's heater, currently on the floor. needs a variable speed switch.
    12. roll bar backing plates... ya them might be good
    13. adjust the exhaust... go to rear dump and tuck the mufflers better
    14. rear fuel tank... not real urgent but an open gas can and spilled gear oil "smells like jeep"
    15. vacuum lines on the quadrajet... i don't remember where they go, it just works
    16. oil pressure relief... i think there is one on the pump, but it's 80 psi at like 2k rpm
    17. overflow bottle... the seafoam can leaks
    18. fix the horn... wires somewhere need fixed
    19. power angle... for the plow
    20. lights... for the plow
    21. transmission mount... torque arm... ya
    22. fix whatever you see that is sketchy
    23. speedometer cable... because tickets are lame

well i got a few minutes to tinker this past weekend, I didn't get much done but it's a start.
The HI-LO pump will mount outboard of the York's new home, The york will get moved downwards 1/2" more to better clear the upper hose. The Alternator will eventually go where the generator is, and the belts will be run once the mechanical fan is out.
Biggest trick will be making heat shields for the exhaust.

Well I've been debating on starting a new thread or reviving the dead...

    Here we go... again.
All of my previous pics on this thread are on photobucket. I don't know how they are surviving so don't be surprised if they disappear.
Here is a starter pic from the day I met Art, Dale, and Dave among many others at the spring Midwest Willys Reunion 2008

    My 1st Spring midwest reunion

And another the following year 2009
    [IMG]
    My 2nd Spring midwest reunion

    Here's a fall reunion 2011
    [IMG]

Now to fill in the last few years...
After graduating college there were a few years I was newlywed and the jeep was at my in laws. During this time I thought I had the 4.3 buttoned up. Then one day I was checking fluids and it looked like a needle bearing was in the Transmission fill tube.
Well I didn't believe what I saw (this was 2014 3 years and several hundred miles after the T90j input shaft swap) and a few days later I went to back up to a wagon. The jeep seemed like there was a rock behind the tire then BANG! Needle bearing found it's way to the reverse idler.
So the jeep now had to sit, new engine with about 10 miles and a blown t-90. Eventually we had a child, bought a garage with a detached house and we pulled the jeep to it's new home somehow we wound up with another child. Eventually i pulled the Transmission and found half of a tooth is gone on the reverse idler. Thankfully Dave Hutchinson had a spare at the midwest reunion. but being a young family with a lot of overhead expenses I couldn't yet buy the rebuild kit, so... it was a Christmas present from my father in law! Right now the goal is to get a Transmission in this thing.

Thank you guys, it's good to be back.
Hopefully I can get the mainshaft ordered in the next few weeks. I got the rest of the Transmission parts ordered. My budget for the jeep is about $25 a week so it might take some time to get parts.

It looks like I need to replace the 2pc rear main seal on the 4.3 and rebuild a quadrajet.
That's kinda a kick in the shin since I could've should've would've just ran a tbi engine non balance shaft with roller cam and 1pc rear main.

Other news the 11"drum backing plates got sold a few years ago in a downsizing. But I got some disk brackets for all 4 corners and I plan to tackle this in turn.
[IMG]Gm disks by Joe with a jeep, on Flickr

I am on the fence with the steering. My Ross steering system is beat. My father-in-laws 66ish has a shotty power Saginaw swap. I just hate how that Saginaw box looks on the front on his. I have seen better swaps but I think I will have to go to the salvage yard with a thermos of tea before I reall know what I want to do.

I did get an alternator installed with my lovely wife's help.
[IMG]Alternator install by Joe with a jeep, on Flickr

I got a plastic replacement defrost duct for Christmas a few years back from my sister-in-law. It is in place with a Chevy blower motor and my recirculate mod.
    My Heater Mod
I am really anxious to see how much warmer it is when it is recirculating and I will be able to mix a little ambient air if needed.

Nothing else has really changed. I have most everything for onboard air but it will just be in the way for now. The hi-lo hydraulic pump isn't in scope for now since I don't plow much snow and I have some better fitting alternatives in mind.

That's all I have to say about that for now.
Thank you to those that have been with me in this journey. I hope to see everyone out on the trails soon.

Welcome back! One of the greatest things about these old Jeeps is that they dont really cost you anything as they sit, and when you're ready to get back to them, they dont take much to get going. Good luck with your transmission woes, I'm sure you'll get things sorted quickly

Unless running big tires I’d just rebuild/replace the Ross setup. I’ve evolved in my opinion on “upgrades”. The original stuff is usually very fine once brought back up to spec. A side benefit, I can go to the parts store and they can look up the 100% correct part number in the computer...

then tell me it’s not in stock or is longer available.
