    Hey all,

I am installing a new (used) oil pump on my dauntless. I bought the oil booster plate kit for it from TA performance. I mocked it up first, installed the gaskets, plate and pump. Initially I could kind of move the pump by hand, after tightening the bolts, I cannot move it by hand. Should the pump be able to spun by hand?

Clarification needed. You are installing a spacer plate designed for high volume pump (I.e. Longer gears) but using stock used oil pump gears? But now won't turn by hand? What are you using to try and turn the pump? Is the pump packed with petroleum jelly or other lube packing?

I'm installing the plate with stock new gears. I have not packed with petroleum jelly yet, as I'm wanting to ensure my clearances are in spec.

Ok, just looked it up. What they are calling a booster plate appears to be a repair plate to repair the oil filter adapter when they get scored up from the ends of the gears, not a spacer like I first thought. First start by checking the clearances between the gears and the walls of the pump cavity in the timing cover with feeler gauges. Then make sure there are absolutely no burrs on the inside edge of the pump cavity. Make sure the ends of the gears are absolutely flat with no burrs. Make sure the oil filter adapter has absolutely no burrs on it. Not a bad idea to use a sheet of emery cloth on a piece of glass with a little water to polish it as smooth as possible. Make sure the bolt holes have no burrs as that can distort things as they are tightened down. When you tightened the bolts you did use a torque wrench right? And not wrist or elbow torque? This is critical when dealing with lbs. per inch torque ratings. If overtightened even a little it can distort the aluminum hosing enough to lock up the gears. Did you put at least a little oil on the moving parts to lubricate them? Aluminum and steel don't like to move against each other without lube between them.
You can also use a straightedge across the pump cavity and the end of the gears and check that clearance with a feeler gauge. They should no protrude past the outside of the cavity and should have some clearance. There are specs for this.

You should be able to turn the shaft with just a slight drag with the pump fully assembled. A little oil is needed as Nick states above. It sounds like you need a slightly thicker gasket to create the proper end clearance. With the spacer plate and tall gears, you should have two gaskets being compressed.
