Attached are pictures from my '72 CJ5.

The chrome rims (15 x 5.5) were on the Jeep. I am being told that these chrome rims were stock on the 'Renegade package' however I am skeptical that my Jeep had the package.
The black rim was the spare (15 x 5.5 with a Goodyear 8.5 5x15). I am fairly confident that the black rim and tire are original.

I am trying to restore as close to stock as possible with some safety mods (disc brakes, power steering). I am looking for opinions on the above issues regarding the rims and some input on:
    • Stock rims; I often see white; was black a legitimate dealer option or was it only white/chrome?
    • I want to stay with the classic look the spare provides however in a tubeless radial; brand suggestions?
    • I want to go with the classic rim look however I am putting disc brakes on the front and I believe I will need to go aftermarket for the offset - suggestions of a stock looking after market 15 x 5.5.)
    • Advantages/disadvantages of going to a 16" rim. This Jeep will be pretty; but it will also be used off road for hunting, fishing, cabin access. To old (me not the Jeep) for crazy however it will be in the back country.

The chrome wheels are aftermarket. The black one looks like a stock Jeep wheel. Going to a 16" wheel is an option but it's tough to find anything wider than 4.5"- 5" wide....I (and several other members) are looking for 16x6 or 16x7 wheels and they're tough to come by.

According to the 1972 Jeep Technical Service Manual (TSM); the standard tires available for that year were the 7.35 x 15”, the 8.55 x 15” or the H78 x 15”.
The TSM indicates that the 6.00 x 16” was an option for that year.
I tend to doubt that as I have never seen any on post 1971 cj’s.

The AMC intermediate Renegades had a 7" x 15 5-slot alloy rim. The stock steel rims for '72 were overall a black "primer" base, with the front face and outer bead sprayed white. Yes, your black rim looks like a stock original 3 nub rim. Chrome rims were not stock. Your 11" drum brakes are pretty effective if they are in good working condition. Have you driven it much with them?

    Thanks Donny,
I have a few miles on it mostly off-road as it was on my brothers ranch. I agree that on the back roads and off-road the brakes were fine. I didnt get the responsiveness that I am looking for when I was on city streets; therefore, the move to front disks.
