I bought an empty dana 44 housing that I will be putting 4.56 gears into. The inner pinion bearing race was still in place and I removed it an it had .035 worth of shims under it. My new pinion has 4.312 etched into it. Since the nominal setting is 4.312 from the factory. would it be proper to use .035 worth of pinion shims when installing the new pinion?

    Thanks

Without the original gear marking you have no reference to start with. It’s going to be trial and error

    This.
Try what you have and go from there. I machine the outside of the inner pinion bearing race so it is a slip fit to use as a setup race. Once I get it where I want it then I install the new permanent race.

Do I need a set up bearing for the outer Pinion bearing (nearest the yoke) or does that bearing slide on without being pressed on?

Most are a slight interference fit.
