Was driving my CJ5 to the store Sunday, and about half way there it stalled. It would start up with choke, but only run a few seconds before shutting down.

I had to walk home, get the truck, a tow chain, and wife to go back and tow it home.

I took the top off the carburetor, pulled the metering rod out and blew some air through all the passages I could get to. It ran a little better, a little longer anyway, but only while choked. Took the top back off and saw very little fuel in the bowl.

Yesterday I pulled the carburetor, disassembled it, and cleaned it very well. I put it back on with a clear fuel filter so I could see what it was getting.

Same thing, would only run while choked, but noticed only a trickle of fuel going through the filter, so I knew it wasn't keeping the bowl full.

I thought it was the fuel pump, and used lot of foul language about the quality of these reproduction pumps.

So, I rebuilt an original pump this morning, intending to install that on the Jeep. When I removed the input line on the pump in the Jeep I noticed some brown gunk clogging the fitting. I removed the flex line and saw more of the same in the hard line.

    THAT WAS MY PROBLEM!

New tank, new lines, new pump, and rebuilt carb. And a little bit of crud probably came inside the tank.

I blew out the flex line into a cup and saw a wad of crud, but I also needed to clear the hard line which had visible crud in it, but I didn't want to drain the tank and disconnect the line, so I came up with a solution.

I saw an outboard motor set of "ear muffs" hanging on the wall in the garage. I removed the rubber cup with the hose fitting.

This fit perfectly over the gas tank fill neck, and all I had to do was blow some air in the tank which cleared the line.

Jeep runs good again, and I now have a freshly rebuilt fuel pump for a spare.

Bummer about the crud causing all the issues but you get an A+ for being resourceful using the rubber muff to blow out the tank & line.
