Spare carrier/bumper 90% done...

Hey all,

First off, I owe a pic to someone.....



Secondly, I've got my spare rack/bumper mostly done. Just some fine tuning and paint. Here's the link to it.....

OK, back up and running. Sorry for the 'fusion. I exceeded my server space....Problem solved.

That thing turned out built like a Shick Brit house. Jeez, Do I overbuild things or what?! The cut off saw made it possible. I simply couldn't undertake a project like this even though I had the gumption to do so. All I need is a bit heftier welder (and some practice), and I'll be crazy skilled!

Happy as a clam that I finally get my bed area back.

I was going to pm you, but I figure others may like some info from you as well.

This is one of the nicest rear tire carriers that I've seen that matches my skill / fab level. Could you put together a 'parts list' of the steel, etc. that you needed to complete this project? I would like to tackle this soon.

hmmm sure people would think i am crazy but i like that setup. it also gives you a place to step up if you need to, maybe even a seat for trailside lunches.

Here is the 'parts' list...

Thanks for the compliment! Here ya go!

The rear "bumper" was a 3"x3"x1/4" wall about 57" long, with another 6" long piece above the center.

The "hinge" is 2"x2"x 3/16" angle. 2 pieces 8" long.
Another 18" piece is the upright crossmember, where the jack mounts, and short 2" pieces for the jack bolt holders.

The upright is a piece of 2"x2"x3/16" wall about 27" long.

The D ring mounts are some 2.5"x2.5"x3/8"

Various pieces of flat stock for the end caps and the jack plate.

The ONLY things I'd do slightly differently are...

Clamp the upright post with only a .005"~.010" piece of sheet between it and the angles before welding. I used about a .025", and it's sloppy. I'll have to put in an appropriate shim to take care of this.

Make the upright a tiny bit taller. My jack is fairly close to the fresh paint, but with the carrier down to remove the jack, it won't matter.

Bill, that is an awesome piece of work. I think I would prefer that design on my CJ-7 as opposed to the side swing stock one. On the trail it seems like I am always tilted the wrong way and it wants to slam shut on me will I am trying to do whatever. With your design gravity works for you not against you.

That tire mount hub looks like maybe a rear axle hub from a 2 piece dana 44? I have seen setups where the tire mount itself was actually a front wheel hub, bearing, lockout and all. This was all assembled to a spare front spindle bolted onto the carrier, just like on a real front end. That way you have all the extra parts. The tire actually turned! That's adding a lot of weight though.

Are you going to grease the pivot bolt? I was thinking maybe a bronze bushing could be used, but probably more trouble that it would be worth.

I am a big fan of backup lights, Hella makes some good one, sometimes marketed as flood or work lights. I have one that has dual 55w bulbs in the one housing on my -7. When offroad, I find that a good rear light is sometimes more handy than extra front lights. Any spare tire carrier I used would have to incorporate a mount for a light. That parts pretty easy usually, sometimes neatly running the wire isn't though.
