I was going to go with this column but you also mention using the stock column. Did you switch from the Ross to the Speedway at some point? What did you do about the lower bushing on the outside of the tube (stock column)?

The lower stock column bushing, bearings etc were either NLA or a PITA to source, so I went with the speedway one, spent less money and time and had a better product for my purposes. If you can find a good stock 71 or 72 or postal or whatever for 50 bucks, go for it. I never used the ross box on this jeep because I hate them and the whole setup, plus the replacement parts are garbage for a rebuild. Went saginaw from the very beginning. Cheaper and better.

I really want to run the stock steering wheel - thats about my only requirement after "column must look stock." Any tips on mating the column to a stock wheel?

Your wheel will go over the column where as mine was basically kinda flat on the backside, so I just clamped the wheel in my mill and made it flat to sit on the speedway hub and drilled the holes to mount.

I used the original column and shaft, Pulled the shaft out of the ross box and cut the worm off, sourced a flanged bearing to fit inside the column and outside the shaft and drilled a hole in a piece of 16ga sheet metal with a hole saw to hold the bearing in the column flange with the shims from the ross box for spacers with bolts going through the sheet metal and the column flange. I had to cut a small portion from one of the floor plates for all 3 bolts to fit through the floor. The sheet metal was oversized so I drilled holes in it and through the floor to mount it. And cut the top of the column. It looks like it was made that way. The major obstacle I had was grinding the shaft to go through the bearing and accept the 3/4" DD Ujoint as the shaft is larger than 3/4". It had to be cut to proper length, approximately 1 1/2" just below the floor. Grind to 3/4" diameter and file clean, then grind and file a DD end. The shaft is a hollow tube so I filled it with a 9/16" x 3" bolt and drilled a hole through the flat for the set screw. It is not connected to the steering gear yet but I am confident it will work. The disappointing part is the horn, I cant seem to figure out how to make it work since the bottom of the shaft is now solid.

I cut 3/4 of the worm off, used a grinding wheel to grind down the rest to fit into a ujoint. The u joint is a bit small (3/4) about but still left the whole for the turn signals wires. Still in process of fabbing. Once I get it working I’ll update it. But wasn’t sure if there were easier ways, but hard to get the postal jeep column. Not like i can get one easily
