US Military NOS M38 Dana 18 Transfer Case Museum Quality - auto...
is this DANA 18 M38 specific, or T90 specific?
it has texas pattern and 6 spline input, so any such transmission should fit. the difference between the early and late ones is the size of the intermediate shaft, and later (67 i believe) the case was made stronger.
I thought only civillian Jeeps used that style parking brake, but I've never had an original M38.
All my M38a-1's have had the external band brake.
It would be interesting to see if this one has the 1 1/8" intermediate shaft.
Have you seen this particular one, or are you just parroting what you read on the innerweb?
A band, or external/internal shoes?
I stand corrrected. Yes the small stamped drum with small internal/external (worthless!) shoes, but not the cast ribbed drum brake shown on the crated transfer case.
I was remembering the modification I ran for many years where I ran a friction band around the outside of the small drum. It worked so much better than the original setup. I had an orschein lever between the seats to operate it.
Not to argue, but my experience is that the shoes worked pretty well, if clean and adjusted correctly. But most are worn and oily by the time any new owner experiences them
12/59 date on the crate? M38 phased out m38a1 on the scene 52ish?
I once had the opportunity to buy a 134L still in its Military Crate A guy in Salem had bought three of them at some auction. It was just sitting out along the street with a for sale sign on it. At the time I was driving a 57 Wagon with a 226 in it so I wasn't interested. I think he was asking $400 which I thought at the time was outrageous would have been 1977
I wish that was a lot le$$. I think my transfer case is ok-I just think it's cool. I guess I'll find out one of these days.
IDK. I have purchased some NOS M38 parts that are dated 1967. They may be the same as the A1 but I don't think so. The steering sector shaft seemed to be unique to the M38 steering box.
I have the cast ribbed drum on my M38. Pretty sure it is original.
That’s the same parking brake set up I had on my ‘52 M38 as well. Definitely original.
It's only like this once...
Crate states its reusable. Might have been used several times over. I don't believe that crate goes specifically to that transfer case.
