T-9 Transmission

Did the 40s Willys ever use a T-9 transmisson or were all the pre-T98 Willys T90 only?

 

Not familiar with a "T9" transmission, Jeep application or otherwise. The MB/GPW Jeeps used the T84-along with other manufactures (my 41 Nash has a T84 side shift). That carried over to a handful of very early 2A's and the T90 was used from there on, through 1971 with the F heads. The T98 4 speed became an option someplace around 1955 but not sure it showed up in CJ's at that time. I think the only other 4 speed ever used in early CJ's was the T18, behind the 225 V6's.

 

The only T9 that I've ever heard of is a 5-speed from the Euro market ford sierra/Merkur Xr4ti. That would be a horrible transmission for a jeep. Its weak, there are very few 4wd versions (sierra xr4wd), and its long. However, it is well after the 40's time period, so I'm guessing that the 5-speed t9 is not the trans you're talking about.

I wonder if the t-98 was named after the t-9 and t-8 since it was next in the progressive lineup?

Like, the 9 & 8 gave birth to the 98?

 

If it's prewar and has a round bellhousing adapter/casting, it probably came from behind a flathead Ford V8.

 

I created a new thread specifically to hit the pre-55 era in this Forum. I didn't know if there was a 4spd upgrade from the T90 pre-1955. I hoping if that was the case, the T9 might have been in a Willys at one point, albeit a very rare option.

I don't have the flywheel housing, just the round SAE looking bell and a beefy 1-3/8th input. This did appear to be a older two-piece style setup. The owner mistook it for a 'Willys' engine (which he removed and is maybe using), so my assumption is a flathead inline 6 - Continental, Ford, or maybe even Dodge.
