Yes. Lock up the transmission as suggested, remove the nut and that gear should come out through the t-case without issue.

I happened to see another rebuilt T14 on ebay. It had a picture showing the internals, I saved that photo to my PC. Then I used the windows 10 photo editor to lighten it up. All this to see which way the groove on the syncro collar was facing. It is facing to the rear like I built mine, and like the TSM shows, so I feel a little better about stating that Novak's instructions are wrong (second post of this thread), the groove is to face the rear.

Glad you posted this Grant as I remember second-guessing this same thing as well. Ultimately (like you) I went with how it came apart, have build 3 this way since and no issues. (y)

Hello, First time posting, and I have to say this site is GREAT, there is soooo much knowledge here! I am in the middle of my T14 rebuild, i got my parts from Herm, so i am kind of using this thread as my guide. i have 2 questions i need some help with:

On step #9 - How critical is the orientation of the outer vs. inner ring? I didn't scribe them before I separated them, so I may have gotten myself into a pickle!

On step #11 - There a sure fire way to tell if you sliding the inner ring onto the splines correctly? I think the PO may have used FORCE to install it, as I had to use a puller to remove it.

Great, Great article! I used it to start my rebuild last night. I realize this is an older post, so I’m not sure if you’ll see this post. Do you recall if there is a snap ring that goes on just after the reverse gear? My shaft has what appears to be a slot for one. It’s thin and none of the rings that came in the kit fit the groove, wondering if I should leave one off?
