Does anyone worry about their dust cap falling off - or maybe everyone has already lost their dust cap and doesn't worry about it. The wagon caps fit on reasonably snug, I was thinking of using a bit of RTV to ensure they stay....and maybe it would also keep some water out? Anyone have a good tip?

Hmmm. I can't get mine to go on

Just keep a bit of grease on the threads/nut.

I did the RTV route, had same idea about water. Put a couple of dimples with a center punch maybe? Just to make it more snug.

I like to also use a piece of soft cloth to cushion the blow.

I have never had one fall off but don't doubt you could knock one off if you managed to hit it on something. That is probably more of a problem running skinny tires. I usually have a difficult time getting them off without bending the flange.

The flange was bent 'upward' (toward the top of the cap) on mine as well - so I think 'flattening' or reshaping the flange after I put it on did kind of what Glenn was suggesting in terms of pinching the open end up a bit and snugging the fit up more (but without having to dimple it). At this point, I'll probably have to bend the flange to get it off - and that is okay. At some point, when I go back in to check on the shoes etc, I'll paint the backing plates, outer drum and hub, as well as the dust caps so they all look a bit nicer....On a different note, after cleaning out all the old gunk/grease/dirt off the tapered shaft and out of the keyway, the fit of the key was pretty obvious and no issues. But I will say I was surprised how quickly the castle nut went from free spin to maxed out 150ft-lbs....Actually, I don't have a torque wrench that goes above 110 or so its a bit of an estimate, but it was mostly determined by where I could get the cotter pin hole to line up with the castle nut. Basically, backing off the castle nut to get to the next available 'space' put me way under the 150 ft-lbs, so I went to the next tighter one, which was a helluva hard pull - granted my breaker bar isn't that big. On yet another side note...messing with the hubs and axle got me concerned there is too much play in the differential...Don't know if its the backlash between the R&P or slop in the side gears...just seems like a lot from hand turning the back and forth...There is definitely no traction device in the rear - might have to work on that one day!

Wait till Mrs Eisenhauer isn't home, and throw it in the oven for a few minutes on low heat.

That was my intention, throw out the idea of doing something to snug it up. What you did worked. (y) Beats wondering when it fell off. :D

If I tried anything like that I would hear about it more than once.

For my full float D44 when I put the drive flanges on I use a 1.5" IPS (1.9 O.D.) rubber pipe cap. It's easy to take off and put on. I don't know if this would work on a tapered axle though.
