Thoughts On Undercoating

    Well said. I agree completely. Still, is my idea of using Raptor under the tub misguided? I've got it sandblasted to bare metal and sprayed with a two-part primer. I figured I'd scuff, de-grease, spray with Raptor and have a waterproof/chip-proof tub. I appreciate all the advice I've gotten from this site, so if I'm about to make a mistake please stop me.

    Not trying to hijack the thread. I figure this goes along with the OP's question.

    i use raptor on the inside and high impact spots underneath, allow for drainage everywhere and use fliud film.

    Not at all.......and here is what I have found with these Jeeps and rust.........Yes, there are plenty of little hidden cavities along the frames and body mounts where rust will form., but water is not the enemy.....it's all the dirt , dust , fine sand and organic matter that finds its way in there that retains the moisture that causes the rust.........after any trip in the woods when I get home I take it by the $1.00 car wash and give the Jeep a good bath underneath including the engine compartment.....that's why I have no rust to speak of.

    You guys in the East that are slushing through snow , mud and chloride based deicers for months of the year and not once rinsing your vehicles off will sorry about that!...... These chloride products typically all increase corrosion and other than making Ice melt faster are no different corrosion wise than rock salt. Get a decent undercoating done and rinse your vehicle's off.

    Rinsing them off is the key. My brother is in Pittsburgh, and comes down my way for a used car, because he bought a Cherokee, went in for brake work and the mechanic told him not to put any money in it because it was so rusted the rear axle was about to fall off.

    We had an old Jeep Wagoneer and drove it on the beach, we rinsed it off and kept it many years before it rusted out.
    When we got the Blazer, it was Ziebart Rust proofed and touched up every so often, we rinsed it off every time we went to the beach and it never rusted out. When they spray the roads with salt, i can't hardly wait to wash it off.

    I didn't think this would have so many responses! Good stuff! I'll probably stick with the original plan, u-pol gravitex in the wheel wheels, regular washes, and lots of fluid film.

    When I was 17, my father had me brush roofing tar all over the underside of my '74 VW Super Beetle to fight against the Massachusetts winter. I had that car (my first) for four years up and down the east coast, and never had a rust issue.

    It was a nasty business, and I don't know that I'd do it again... but it sure seemed to work out.
