I just installed a new solex on my '58 cj5 and it starts with some difficulty always with the choke all the way out. But now there's a dead spot when I try to accelerate. When I manually pull back the throttle on the carb, I hit the dead spot and it'll die if I don't get it past that spot. I've got a pertronix instead of points. Have new plugs. Everything else seems ok.

Any ideas about what's causing it? Could it be the pertronix going out?

    No idea about solex.

If this was a Carter carb, I'd say acceleration pump circuit, or vacuum leak, possibly at the carb/manifold gasket.

Look into carb, gently pull throttle, you are getting a squirt aren't you?
If so, then try advancing the timing?
My 134 set bout 12 btdc.

Just curious, is it an actual Solex or a Solex copy? I'm not saying it makes a difference, really just wondering since they now sell a Solex replacement as the original Solex isn't available.

There is an external adjustment for the accelerator pump on the side so you could check that out.

Solex are fine if dialed in, worked on vw flat fours for years, they had solex stock.
Be sure u got a Dr ent strea m of fuel when working the gas lever!
Also u mentioned the ign system, be sure u have 8-14 btdc timing, slow idle(6-800rpm).
Might need more squirt or larger main?
Ps, I really like the carter 1 barrels that are still plentyfull .
Mine is a Carter for motorcraft that came off an amc car?
Itl crawl or itl haul! But their is a slight lean dead spot, just off idle, till it warms up?

Adjust the acc pump to get a little more off the line. Mine was originally doing the same exact thing. A little more and it woke right up.

    I liked my Solex.

    Solex = Junk

The two I had were nothing but trouble. Replaced them with original carters and the engines were much happier.

Since this is a new Solex meant to work with this engine, the first thing to look for is vacuum leaks. In particular, the base gasket would be suspect, or any intake manifold gaskets (pretty sure there are none on the F134), or any other places like vacuum plumbing that could let air into the intake manifold. What you describe sounds like it's too lean. This will most show up on acceleration or when starting.

I presume you got the Solex because the original Carter was not working well. Possible the problem was not the carburetor but a vacuum leak instead, and you have the same problem with the new carburetor.

If it's not a vacuum leak, there could be something wrong with the carburetor ... but a new Solex meant for this engine should run fine out of the box, with only the adjustments that the instructions specify. A new carburetor made specifically for this application, and installed properly on an engine that does not have other problems, should run fine with only minor adjustments like idle speed and idle mixture. Maybe the pump shot is easily adjustable. If the engine runs with the Carter carb, and you (correctly) bolt on the Solex and it does not, there is likely something wrong with the carburetor.
