My electronic ignition box has a cascade of epoxy running out of it.

Is there a good, better, best replacement?

I have been running a MSD Variable advance control module for over 25 years almost 200,000 miles with out problems.
    Others will post their recommendations.

On your '75? It should have the Prestolite BID (Breakerless Inductive Discharge) which nearly everyone believes is not worth saving. It's a unique system, incompatible with everything else. Nearly everybody replaces it with either a '78-up Duraspark distributor and one of several compatible modules, or an aftermarket GM-HEI distributor.

There's nothing available for the BID other than direct replacement parts from the parts store. My '77 J10 still has its BID system has been running a Napa module (Eichlin) all the time I've owned it. So, chose your brand and parts store, if you want to keep the BID stuff.

MSD stuff is not compatible with BID.

I went to NapaOnline and looked up the module for my truck, and they incorrectly point to a Motorcraft module. If you have that problem, this is the module you want - More Information for STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS LX401 Seems that all of them are gold anodized.

You should be able to get the Napa equivalent if you give the counterperson the Standard LX401 number, and have them cross to that. Or just buy the Standard part - that's a quality brand. Airtex-Wells is good too.

It looks like I bought an ICM for nothing.
After reading about rejeeps ignition woes, while installing my new box I got to thinking. I removed the distributor cap and sure enough I have points.
I bought a really nice 73 J10 about 18 years ago that had rolled up on its side in the snow just enough to tweek the cab. It had a built 360 that I put in the CJ6. I don't even remember thinking about the differences in ignition between the 73 and the 75 CJ.
So for now once again I am running with an ICM in the system and Lord knows what it is helping or hurting or doing nothing.
It looks like I am going to be studying some wiring diagrams.

The 73 has a ceramic resistor strapped to the coil and it looks like a Delco distributor.

    Pretty embarrassing.

On a positive note I did polish the M/T-Alcoa Challengers I found on Craigslist and I am ready to install them.

It's a Delco. Same as any GM V8 car from the era, except the body and gear are built to fit the AMC engine. Without the Prestolite distributor, the Prestolite module does nothing.
