Wondering what works good for a swing hinge for a tire carrier.
Anyone use an actual Hinge for the pivot? or is the "post with bearings" method the better way to go.

Anyone have a source for a pivot? Or am I going to have to make up something?

Most of your jeeps that I've seen had an "extra" bumper/crossmember mounted onto the stock rear crossmember so the tire carrier mounted to the top of the new bumper. I thought of doing something similar, but have a heavy duty hinge mounted to one end of the crossmember and new bumper so the whole bumper/tire carrier swung out as one. Am I making any sense?? ANyone else try this?

Brian, I've got something you can use but don't really know what it is.

I believe it's a hub assembly of some sort.

I'll have to get it out and take some pics of it.

I had planned on using it myself but I found a Kayline carrier that already has the hinge part so I don't need it.

COUGH! $120??? For a 1000# trailer hub? Sounds like McRuff is needed to come to the rescue here for a better (and cheaper) alternative. Mike, are you out there???

That Rockstomper hinge is the same as the one here:

    http://www.troutindustries.com/

I bought just the tube and bought the spindle and bearings at TSC. Cheaper to buy the whole deal from Trout Industries though. ;)

Trout industries has a good price for a good product. I use them on the bumpers I sell.

I did one quite awhile back. I recently sold an extra hinge to Quaggy for his project.
    Edit:
This is the hinge Quaggy and I use.
Item# 44-2100, I think it's 2nd down on the right side. 2000 Lb capacity sealed bearing hinge.

Note that price shown is for a pair; sold only in pairs.

Man I made mine out of a steel pin with a zerk fitting on the end, fit into a steel bushing with grease grooves that was welded into the tubing of the carrier frame, I just couldn't see all that money for a set of bearings that was never gonna spin.
But then again I make most all of this kinda stuff because I'm Dutch like Boyink, nah make that down right cheap instead of dutch! :D

Yea, Brian. I'm interested in one. I'm thinking of doing a tire carrier project.(Have a new welder)
If you have to buy two, I'll take one off your hands, split the cost.
    Let me know.

I hear ya Mike. I just don't have many tools for working with metal. I'm going to look around and see what I can find.

If I do decide to go with that set of hinges, I'll let you know Wayne.
