I’ve posted several times about how My Jeep is stuck in low gear. Sunday i have a friend coming over with a goal of figuring out what’s going on.

Attached below are pictures of my transfer case. Can you tell me which side controls low/high and 2/4?

    https://photos.app.goo.gl/kEBRJeBNReTSU3op8

how tight should the linkage be? Where it connects at the two bolts?

    https://photos.app.goo.gl/7GvhtdGW8Laf6GRH7

    Any tricks I should try.

There looks to be a vacuum hose on the driver size, what purpose does that serve?
    https://photos.app.goo.gl/NJZAQGV4ggcFWq9y7

I don’t know where to look for identification numbers.

    Transmission identification info

Thanks for your help in advance!

try making the jeep go, and forcing it out of gear. i personally believe that if the t-case isn't strong enough to be manhandled a bit, it doesn't deserve my love.

Sitting in the driver's seat the shift rail on the left is the rear output and the right shift rail is the front output.

Mine is a pain to get the front axle to shift in and out. I usually have to slip the clutch and pull or push the lever to shift.

You realize there is an interlock in the transfer case that forces you to shift the axles in a specific way?

You are not allowed to shift to front axle low and rear high, or vice versa. You are also not allowed to shift to front wheel drive, low or high. If both axles are in low range (allowed) to get to both axles in high range (allowed), you shift the front to neutral (2WD low, allowed), then shift the rear to neutral (full neutral, allowed). Then shift the rear to high (2WD high, allowed) then shift the front to high (4WD high, allowed).

The original shift linkage will follow this path. If you do not have the linkage, you need to know what movement on each shift rod does, and follow the allowed path.

Suggest you study chapter 8 of the 1977 TSM, free to read and download here: Jeep® Parts Manuals online

The first few pages explain the Dana model 20 shifting, and the shift linkage is described on pages 10 and 11.

That's a T-176, not the original transmission. Not offered in the CJ until 1980. A '77 would have the T-18. Either the transmission was swapped in, or you have the wrong title for that Jeep.

Also, the transfer case appears to be a Dana 300 with the Dana 300 type shift linkage. (which aligns with the T-176 transmission)

I don't know anything about them, but if you search google for "Dana 300 won't shift" you find lots of hits. It seems like they shift hard in the best of times and the rails can get rusty and not move in the worst of times.

You might try Jacking up the Jeep to remove any driveline binding and gently tapping the end of the rails with a brass drift to see if you can get them to move at all.

Looking at the twin stick pattern from here: https://www.omix-ada.com/instructions/OMIX-6450.pdf

It seems like for 2wd high, the driver's side rail needs to be all the way forward and the passenger side rail needs to be in the middle of it's travel.

Ah, of course. There is an '81 TSM at the same site that will show the Dana 300. The shift pattern is reversed from the Dana 20, but it has the same shifting scheme, with a separate rod for each axle. I expect the interlock works the same too.

Ohhhhhhhh I LOVE customers with that philosophy. Although they typically don’t like the repair bills from the carnage lol!

My father and I removed a T15/Dana 20 from his 1973 over the Christmas break. It was my first rebuild, but wasn’t nearly as difficult or complex as I feared. At the end of four days, we cleaned it all up, replaced, bearings, seals, and other worn parts with those provided in the rebuild kits. It was actually pretty straight-forward and wasn’t expensive.

Based on my admittedly limited experience, I would simply drop them down, pop the covers and start inspecting for worn or broken parts. There are tons of diagrams and pictures on the internet and in manuals to assist as well.

to put it in perspective I have 3 18’s for my ‘59-5. The one in it and two spares. I haven’t broken one but wear the gears and intermediate shafts out big time. When one gets noisy it gets replaces with a spare. The one that came out gets torn Down and thoroughly inspected. Anything worn gets replaced and rebuilt ready to go back in. I used to have 4 but the fourth has been used for replacement parts. I’ve been collecting gears and other parts as I wear them out. With a mildly warmed up 231 V-6. I run my stuff hard but don’t shockload it. I had a customer who used to shockload his and was in Once a month looking for replacement gears. He even broke a case in half once.

i have the f-134, so less power going through the t-case, less likely to catastrophically fail?

Doesn’t matter if you abuse it. I’ve seen flatheads break parts.
